Being a geriatric newbie to the RSV-R , what are the popular or common mods that can be done.
Reading between the lines I get
Airbox
Eprom
Exhaust
Carbon Fibre bits
But what about chains/sprockets and brake pads , whats best and or recomended ?

Gearing wise if it's standard then it's way overgeared.
17/42 is oem but 16/42 or 44 is a popular mod. (pre 04 bikes)
16/40 is oem post 04 and popular size is 15/40 or 15/42
If you change chains go for a decent make. cheap ones have a habit of failing/stretching due to the torque.

I second that; Griff convinced me to try 15t when he was doing some other work on my '01 rsvr. Took some getting used to riding home in the wet but the poke is awesome!

... also consider PCIII and maybe bigger throttle bodies. Some change to a rear brake master cylinder upgrade. You can go on and on ...
All the best

http://www.renthal.com/File/gearing_ratios.asp
Follow this link, it will give you every variation of front to rear sprocket sizes, and show the drive ratio you get from each, so start with your bikes original gearing, then compare to the one that you fancy trying.

Split links have been known to break or fall of taking the chain with it.
This can cause accidents if it locks the rear wheel, smash engine cases and all kinds of other dangerous stuff
