Don't think there is a lot in it to be honest. Prefer non oiled filters generally myself.

I had a B & C filter in mine. Not sure if pipercross are oiled but K and N are. Just a personal thing really that I don't like the idea of oiled air filters.

From what I've seen with regards to k&n (oiled) and standard (non oiled) filters the results on a fair few dyno runs have shown that standard are better. Now for the life of me I can't remember the site it was all on. Oiled filters are ok (in my eyes) in countries with lots of dust.

I think Micah over on AF1 shares that opinion,in fact I've yet to meet anyone who thinks K&N are an improvement over standard (apart from the P/O of my bike ) Confused

BMC or Pipercross seem to be the favourites.

Standard ones flow the same as aftermarket filters when new but after a while they start to slow down the dirtier they get which is where aftermarket ones come in to there own plus you can clean them

I use k&n, bought it in 2006, clean it every year and re-oil. This year will be the 8th time....not bad from one filter, and one k&n oil kit. How much is stock filter? Tenner???

I guess the bigger the surface area = more air volume = less restriction.
I have a K&N in my standard airbox, but just bought a huge square Pipercross to go onto my hooked airbox.

If you're using a standard airbox, you're restricted by the mould to go any bigger.

Just my opinion though

Definately bigger is better - to the point that it flows what the engine can consume. After that, going larger makes no difference.

I've always used K&N when racing or tuning, always been excellent. I find they are less affected by water if used in potentially exposed areas such as a hooked airbox.

Would you say that if the filter does get dirty, and therefore start to be restrictive, then a larger filter area also keeps the upper limit of volumetric flow higher than a standard size one?
ie a bit more headroom to rely on.

Well yes, don't work on the margins, always worth keeping some headroom, just meant you don't need to go doubling the size (For example) for no reason.

Honest opinion

It does not matter
What you need to achieve is a bigger airbox volume as per EVO kit
Or open wit the renegade / hooked kit.

Only bonus with a K&N is you can clean it
Just an honest opinion :-)

Sorry Redrat, no I'm not at home today. I can dig it out for you later. I bought mine from Tweeks as they're only up the road from me.
