Had my '05 Tuono for about a month now and it feels like I'm running a partially flat front tyre.
Feels like the front end is vague and moving around, as though the tyre is following a small rut in the road.
Decided to get to the bottom of it this w/e after having the rear linkage apart, re greased and PTFE washers fitted.
The back end has no play in it at all; moved onto the front and again no play in the wheel bearings, head bearings or Showas themselves.
Then I noticed that the steering could be moved very slightly with no resistance, which I thought was odd because the bike's got an Ohlins steering damper fitted.
Even on the minimum setting the damper provides a fair bit of resistance.
When I put my finger on the damper rod end at the spherical bearing, the attachment bolt was moving slightly independently of the rod end itself; this was allowing a few mm of 'free play' at the handlebars. I removed the damper and then pushed out both spherical bearings; the rod end one was well worn and the main body one was on the way.
I've idented the badly worn bearing as an SKF and had a look on t'internet. It's the cheapest plain unsealed bearing you can buy in it's size, which is a bit disappointing considering the cost of an Ohlins damper.
The main body bearing has no ident marking, so will visit the local bearing shop this week to find a replacement (at least this bearing has O rings sealing it).
Hopefully new bearings will sort the problem out.

Have you ridden it without the steering damper to completely discount it?

Don't think my damper does very much, the bars move a lot at speed which I don't mind tbh. Funny thing is, ive had a couple of front end slides recently and not riding any differently. Think it's the tyre going off as its done about 4500 miles. Already replaced the rear so will change as a pair.

Yep, took it out for a run as soon as I got home from work tonight.
Symptoms disappeared, new bearings already on order.
Got to say Ian, I'd be quite happy riding without the damper, it's probably not needed on the road except in exceptional circumstances...however you can guarantee it'd be used by my insurers as a get out clause, should the worst ever happen.

The damper caused bad handling on mine once and found that the brake pipes were touching the adjuster wheel and winding it on when I turned the bars.

So... the bearings have been replaced and the problem persists.
I have noticed when I had the damper on the bench that it took a lot of effort to get the piston rod moving; as in a rod end on the bench and a lot of weight to get the body to start moving down the rod.
Once moving it took much less effort and was smooth across it's range.
I'm thinking the initial resistance to movement is causing my problem.
Has anyone ever serviced their own damper, or got a link to a manual?
It can't be that difficult to strip and check, but I need instructions really for stripping down, and rebuilding / refilling.

Just found a service manual online, looks like it needs  a handful of special tools to strip down / rebuild. Looking at an Ohlins dealer job then.
Sorry about the number of posts, I still haven't got the option to edit any previous ones.

That's exactly what happened to my Ohlins damper. Apparently the internal bushes dried and perished making the damper hard to get moving. I took mine to Crescent Suzuki an Ohlins service centre and they fixed it for about £105 iirc. The bloke on the desk took some convincing that it wasn't working normally, "they are all this stiff sir". Works perfect now.

Useful to know. My damper is a little reluctant to get moving but smooth as silk once it is. Was told as well that they all do that. It is now wound right off so not really doing anything.
I have a slow speed 'vagueness' to the steering that improves with fresh tyres.
Maybe bite the bullet and get my Ohlins overhauled.
