Afternoon all.
Just doing an oil change and found a  large piece of metal on the magnetic plug. I'm thinking it might be part of the sprag clutch even though there was no death rattle from it. You can see from the picture, it had gotten scored and hot at some point.  There is no other metal in the oil.
Just looking for guidance on where to start stripping down first.

Can you put your finger next to it or something similar to give a sense of scale. Hard to tell if it’s 10mm or 10cm in size from the pic.

Hard to say. To me it doesn’t look like part of the sprag. Given its size I doubt it could even get through the oilways from the sprag to the sump plug area. So my guess would be it’s fairly local to the gearbox area. But what it s exactly I couldn’t say.

Id go onto Fowlers website and look at the diagrams to see if I could find anything resembling you piece. Thats my best guess , sorry.

Can't really help but is it steel (looks like it and being by the magnetic plug would suggest it), aluminium?

I was expecting big flakes in the oil but as you say, that is a big piece. You would think something would not feel or sound right while running/riding to help narrow it down. I'm amazed that hasn't snagged something and caused a catastrophic failure.

Thanks for the replies lads.
There is no sign of anything similar on Fowlers schematics.
What I have found on an Internet search is a large circlip holding the sprag into the back of the flywheel. See pictures.
I'll start looking there as it's the less intrusive option to start with

Worth checking but very similar circlips appear in various places in the engine.

Just an update on this issue.
By using a magnetic tool,  I was able to salvage the remaining pieces of a large circlip, very similar to the circlip used in some sprags.
There shouldn't have been this type of circlip in my sprag, even though there was space for it. There are some small signs of scoring  on the back of the flywheel weight  but the sprag gear escaped marks.
I confirmed with Griff that there are no other circlips of that size anywhere else in the engine.
