I haven't been posting for a while as we had to endure our second move in 1 year following structural problems with the previous house not picked up in the survey so my beloved RSVR simply didn't get ridden much of last year.
I dusted her off this year a few months back and up until recently have been enjoying the odd ride where it's taken ages to wipe the smile off my face as my current RSVR is the best I've owned or ridden and I've invested a hell of a lot into it. Sadly though I had a serious work related accident a month or so back resulting in very serious spinal and hip injuries. Doctors have told me I need surgery and recovery could be a year or longer but not to expect full mobility to come back. Damage sciatic nerve, ulnar nerve affected from neck to wrists and median nerve damage. Can't walk much except when dosed up on painkillers. Absolutely gutted as the likelihood is I'll never be able to ride the RSVR again but I have very fond memories of riding these wonderful machines over a 23 year period (this is my 3rd one) including my first one to the centenary TT and watching John McGuinness breaking the 130mph lap record ![]() My injuries mean I'm left in excruciating pain if I try and get my leg over the bike and I only hope post surgery that I might be able to manage something more upright but that's not guaranteed. These things happen but all I can hope for is that I'm not in constant pain as I am now, and my bucket list now reads "ride again"! Also having to give up my mountain biking and cricket so will have to wait and see how things pan out. I've regrettably taken the decision to put my RSVR up for sale and listed it in the for sale section of the forum, but far from happy about it. Better that it goes to someone who can cherish and enjoy it. It's been a blast and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with Aprilias, met some wonderful people, some through this forum and of course the inimitable Griff and crew who have been magic to deal with and to know. |

All the best buddy and hope surgery brings you relief. I've not been able to ride yet myself this year due to health issues too but after chemo and surgery to remove top half of left lung and few lymph nodes I've been told I'm a success story so just got 4 more cycles of preventative chemo now, started first one Fri, just to make sure theres nothing left that they might have missed and just to nuke everything to be sure. Not after sympathy here, just sending positive vibes to you and wishing you as much of a recovery as possible. Stay strong and positive. Wishing you all the best

Thanks fellas and cwp, I hope your recovery continues! The constant pain does grind you down but there's always someone worse off so my main concern is in being able to provide for my family, being self employed. Thing's will get better I'm sure, just got to wait it out until I'm seen but my goal is to get back to a bike in a year or so if things go well.

sorry to hear the bad news
defo have that positive outlook that you will ride again after surgery and physio that will you get though it. just arranging a visit to a mate that had an off a couple of month back landed on his backpack and his spine has a tango can shaped dent in it and looks like he’ll be in a wheelchair from now on. another mate just committed suicide too , lost another before xmas. life is cruel and things can happen in an instant that makes us realise how precious it is.

Absolutely. You take so much for granted in life. I'm tempted to put a carrot in front of me, get this one sold and buy a good used BMW RS1200 and let it sit in the garage as encouragement to push me to recovery!

You need one of those hoists as used by Knights in armour to mount their horses to be able to have yourself raised then lowered onto whichever bike you choose.
No need for thanks for this invaluable advice.
Hope you get to the point where that's no longer required and the chronic pain subsides rapidly. And let us know your progress so we can cajole you into even faster progress with encouragement and the occasional insult. And aim to get a Tuono and not a BMW, still a pretty upright seating position.

Lol
I tried the Tuono and even the RS660 but leg position uncomfortable for me, Tried the R1200 and that was perfect and it had surprising shove. Definitely a grown up bike and not as exciting but being on two wheels and able to cover large distances comfortably is now more important that looking longingly at my stunning RSVR and not being able to ride it any longer.

Have you tried a multistrada, all day comfort and you can embarrass superbikes.

I did. Too tall for me and preferred the R1200RS to ride. Way more low down shove, cheaper to service and run.
Just had my first part ex offer for the rsvr......£750

I'd love to say yes but been offered £3K part ex by another dealer for the exact bmw I'm after which came with every box ticked and practically new for a great price so will probably go ahead and take the hit.
No interest anywhere else in private sales.

I don't like the styling on those tbh and having owned a 1200 GSA, and haven't yet ridden anything to better the smooth and huge amount of shove that the 92ftlbs of grunt delivers on the 1200 boxers. The Aprilia is also taller, with fewer servicing specialists local to me and as I already have a stash of BMW tools and extras sat in the garage, the RS was a bit of a no brainer.
I've bought the R1200 RS Sport SE which comes with every conceivable extra, so all the toys including Navi6, active suspension, lean sensitive TC, heated grips, touring, comfort and dynamic packs. It's also one of the most reliable engines I've owned previously. If I can't ride an RSV, the boxer makes a lot of sense to me. I'm sure the Caponard is a great bike, and on paper, there's not a lot to chose between them but for me the boxer is the more suitable bike for me. I'm not wedded to any brand. I see the RSV as an all time classic and would love to have kept it but later Aprilias do very little for me I'm afraid.

I do like Aprilia and particularly love the RSVR which happens to be my all time favourite motorbike and trust me, I've had a few over the years including superbikes from other stables. The RS is not a toy. It's for a purpose which is to cover large distances comfortably and with great handling which it does (have you ridden one?) but with some sporting credentials which by the way it does have. The toys help comfort and for touring and as I need those things too, what's not to like?
My health and injuries mean my superbike riding days are over but anyone who's ridden a modern boxer can tell you they're not anything like a car (ok, the RT is as ugly as heck and as big as a whale from the front), have more low end grunt than most Aprilias (or anything else for that matter) and the RS whilst no sports bike can still put a smile on your face as it's surprisingly flickable, pulls like a train and is way fast enough for public roads real world conditions and certainly quick enough to embarrass most sportscars. You'll find as you get older that your riding style,. like it or not, will change as will what you want from a bike. I want something I can use often, tour on with mates on the continent without needing physio, that is spirited enough to enjoy B road blasts and which most importantly, doesn't cripple me to ride it. An RSV4 will not do all of those things nor would a bimmer r1000RR nor an R1.
A multistrada comes close but having ridden one (1260 Enduro), I found it too tall for me, and it was surprisingly disappointing under 5K revs. I owned a GSA which was fantastic but just a bit too heavy for thrashing about the way you can with an RS and with a knackered back, not ideal to haul onto the centrestand fully loaded. At the end of the day all that matters is I've made the right choice for me. |
