RSV not started for 14 years, now what?

My '02 RSV has sat all alone in a garage for 14 years, I have just given it a full overhaul but it won't start, what a surprise!...

I have done the following regarding the motor refresh;
New Sprag/ oil/ filter/ uprated starter solenoid & cables/ battery (YTX14)/ valve clearances checked/ fuel filters cleaned/ all electrical connections checked & cleaned/ tank cleaned/ fresh fuel/ new plugs/ plug caps/ air filter checked & cleaned.

The engine turns over and I get a good spark so imagine it has to be fuel related, I hear the pump prime and fuel is getting to the throttle bodies but I haven't verified the pressure, I haven't touched the injectors either... 

Any ideas on what is the most likely cause before I start shelling out again? Thanks!

try a wide open throttle 

do not try if the battery voltage drops as it will cause issue’s damage sprag , injectors won’t fire  fire etc

Thanks for the reply, what the thinking behind doing that? Should I hold the throttle wide open before pressing the starter and keep it pinned until it fires - IF it fires that is? How long would you usually expect to turn the engine over before hearing it fire into life?...

yes hold the throttle open like redrat says and press the starter dont know why it works but it has worked for me

Redrat is suggesting it may of flooded and the wide open throttle may start it if you are stranded. 

Now that is sat overnight I’d follow the exact method in the manual. 
Cold start is no throttle whatsoever 
Fast idle on full 
Thumb the starter and do not be tempted to use the throttle. It should fire up and you can then use the fast idle to control the engine speed till warm. 

There is a video on this abiut v twins and aprilias especially, explaining that by a wide open throttle in a cold engine, you increase the pressure in the cylinders by allowing more air in making it even harder for the engine to turn over on a weak battery or old starter cables. Increasing the possibility of damage to the sprag. 

Only way my road Gen 1 would fire from cold was the cold start method from the manual. Race one has the tick over set high so again no throttle was needed in the absence of a fast idle lever.

If you can smell fuel strongly then it’s flooded basically 

If the tank is up and the airbox lid off it may blow flames out the throttle bodies. Be also worth checking the fuel line isn’t kinked or collapsed whilst there

If you have a garage/shed put some heaters around the bike and leave a few hours till the bike and air around it is worm. ( ie trying to create a sunny day ) it used to work for me after a winter parked up

Thanks for all the suggestions, the bike has lived indoors for the past few months as I did the resto work over winter, I'm getting old and don't like freezing workshops anymore 🥶 Plus it's been like summer here, it isn't a chilly RSV!

I don't think it's flooded either, I tried starting the bike on several consecutive days using the correct method, giving it a few prods for a few seconds each on a good fully charged battery. I even tried some easy start that fired it for a split second, hardly a full revolution though. I don't like using it but thought it might give anything stuck a little nudge, but no luck.

There's no smell of fuel until I take the tank off, and I'm careful keeping the fuel lines free and untwisted etc.

I have a set of Falco throttle bodies sitting around, I haven't verified them but they came from a very low mileage bike, assuming they are the same I could swap them over and see if it helps, the thinking is the injectors will be in better condition than mine which haven't injected for so long and might be bunged up, but I don't have any experience with fuel injection systems...

Charge the battery or a jump pack and try to start using the fast idle lever with no throttle. If it doesnt burst into life after a few seconds remove rear plug ( easiest to get to ) and see if its wet and smells of fuel. If not injectors are at fault or battery hasnt enough juice to fire them. Thats where id be going

incidentally i started my falco up after sitting since late 2018 

new battery fitted the bike has no fast idle lever fitted so i wound the idle knob up a bit 

started in the 3rd attempt

running on 1 cylinder by the sound , few back fires and it cleared itself , i left it to warm up let the fans run then gave it a little ride in garage area

Did you prep the bike before leaving it sitting? Mine was abandoned with a bad sprag, left in a barn for years as I have another RSV to keep me happy.

Update: I removed the plugs and they were exactly as I'd put them in, that is brand new. I have found the two injectors are not working correctly, they both failed the 9V click test which isn't surprising really, considering how long they have had to gum up with ancient petrol turning to glue. I have just swapped them for the ones from the falco throttle bodies which were evidently in far better condition, hopefully I'll find time this week to see if we have lift off... I'll keep you all posted 👍

no prep on the falco it was parked up for the winter and then bought a new bike in the spring i sold the bigbang R1 late last year so dug the old falco out 


as for the injectors i thought these needed 10.5 volts to work

hence when voltage runs low you don’t have a chance of it firing

I was looking into ways of cleaning the injectors and found a tool online that used a 9V battery, so I connected a 9V battery to the injector terminals (with all other connections disconnected) and they did nothing, but when I tried the same on my spare Falco ones they both clicked, which was one of the things to verify when using the tool I mentioned above. Luckily the Falco injectors are the same as the ones on my RSV, which were really grimy at the ends when I took them out, I'll leave them sitting in some injector cleaner overnight and will see if this does anything to bring them back to life, but the Falco ones are now on my bike for now.

I bought a cheap thing on ebay that cleaned injectors.  You put the injector in a white tube and the other end of the tube goes on a carb cleaner spray ( nozzel removed ) power the injector with the lead off a 12v battery and push the tube down on the carb cleaner can. Whoosh clean injectors,  worked really well was only £10 or so

BOOM !!!!! She started straight away with the Falco injectors !!! 😺 

After sitting in injector cleaner (that you usually mix with your petrol) overnight the original injectors now click as God intended, although I'll probably clean them up properly and keep them as spares...

I'm so happy top hear the old girl running again, it feels SOOOO good !!! - one day I'll post a video on youtube showing all the work that has been done getting the bike back to it's former glory, I've gone over everything and it's now in the best condition it has ever been since I bought it all those years ago, what a journey ✊👊✊💚🤍❤️

I saw you can knock up your own DIY thing using tyre valves or similar, your £10 extravagance doesn't hurt too much considering, just as long as it worked OK 😉
