Topic: RSV Mille Various Jobs.... Complete OverhaulPosted: 12 Feb 2017 at 15:19 |

Hi Guys,
I have a 2003 Mille and I have decided to put a few quid into it to get it right once and for all. I like to keep things original to a point as I like maintaining the heritage of the bike. So the reasoning why i'm embarking on my project is that the bike has had a few niggley issues since i bought her about a year ago and I feel its time to start ticking jobs off the list in one foul swoop rather than gradually over time. There is also a little damage to the fairing and the bike needs a respray so as i'm going to get into it to that depth, it would be silly not to do the other jobs at the same time. So I need some help on a few bits and pieces and I also would love to hear about any recommendations on what to do with her. I need to figure out how to add images on here and will do when I do. any advice on this would be a help. I want to do a pictorial write up to add to the "How To" guides of each job I'm going to do so knowing how to add images is kinda important.. :-) Also, I have a good amount of experience mechanically with cars and bikes and have the use of a fully kitted garage etc so i'm quite comfortable to do any job that might arise. At the moment, the RSV is the standard red/white black graphics. Like most feedback on forums, the graphics are faded and look tacky and awful. I have also taken off all stickers bar the tank and with the red underside of the bellypan, it actually looks nice. The first advice I need is about the decals I am planning on getting. Does anyone have any experience with The Image Works? The decals i'm looking at are the Haga Replica decals. I think they are really nice looking on the bike. The Image Works look spot on but at £195 for the set, they are on the premium end of the spectrum. Are they really better than others out there? Feedback on this would be greatly appreciated before I buy them. I am getting a professional spray painter to paint the bike in Satin black and then lay the decals and lacquer over the whole lot leaving, hopefully, a lovely shiney end product. The wheels are getting painted, rather than powder coated and in the bluey colour from the Haga scheme. Bearings Whilst the paint work is going on, I am going to strip the rear end and get the Swingarm polished back to "as new" condition, but doing this, I want to strip out all the bearings and replace them. This is where it gets tricky and advice would be appreciated again. The following is the information that I took down from Aprilia Genuine Parts diagrams for a 2002 Mille Standard set up. Ideally, I would love to go to somewhere and hand them all the below and buy a big box of bearings but I am unsure of where to go. Obviously I can go genuine but I would prefer to go down the SKF route or similar and buy the same bearing for a third of the cost. So has anyone got any advice on sourcing bearings like this or a contact that I can call that would be familiar with bike bearings? Front Wheel Bearings: AP8125777, 25x47x12 Front Wheel Seals: AP8125773, 30x47x7 Rear Wheel Bearings: AP8106806 x 2, 6205-2RS1, 25x52x15 Rear Wheel Seal RHS: AP8125786 x 1, 38x52x7 Carrier Bearing x 2: AP8110081 x 2, 30x55x13 Carrier Seal x 1: AP8121213 x 1, 38x55x7 Swingarm Needle Bearing, LHS x 1: AP8110078 Seal LHS x 1: AP8144005 Swingarm Bearing RHS x 2: AP8110079 O Ring RHS x 1: AP8144048 Seal x 1: AP8144006 Dogbone Needle Bearings x 6: AP8110065 Dogbone Seals x 6: AP8110068, 18x24x3 Connecting Pin x 3: AP8135924 Swingarm Bearings There is a little confusion on this one. I know they have the needle bearings and then standard ones, but is the replacement straight forward enough? Can I just remove the old bearings including any race etc and just replace with brand new everything? I have seen some people saying they have replaced just the needle bearings themselves but I want 100% brand new everything. Dog Bone Linkage Bearings I assume, just like the needle bearings in the swingarm, that you can pull out the old seals and bearings and replace the whole lot easily enough? From reading on Forums, peoples experience on these is varied at best so having a really clear understanding of the correct way to do these is important to me. Is it simply a case of remove centre pin, remove seals, remove bearings and race, deep clean the linkage components and grease and replace bearings, seals and pins? Something tells me that I may need new pins also so I'll add these to the shopping list. Chain & Sprocket Simple enough to do, but just looking for feedback on tooth count between front and rear and the differences that the changes will do. What brands do people recommend? Personally I like the Renthal sprockets. any feedback? Engine: When I first bought my Mille, the engine had a weird shudder in it. I think I have an old post about it on here somewhere, but, in the end, I acquired a new engine with 14,000 miles on it and replaced the engine myself. I plan on replacing the pipework with Samco red hoses. The engine is running fine bar the clutch slips a little so I'll do the plates and sort that issue. I am replacing any old casing screws etc to clean everything up and after that, I am not sure what I could do to improve the standard set up further. I might put in a clutch slave cylinder though. Exhaust: I have the arrow shot gun 2:1 set up and matching chip for it. What an exhaust. I have bought 10mt of black 1" exhaust wrap bandage and plan to wrap each header, then the collector piece, finishing just as the pipework appears from the RHS fairing. I find the heat from the rear Header terrible during the summer. It cooks my right leg and I wouldn't want to think what the shock is put through. Powder Coating I am getting the Spring and the original clip on end weights redone. Only a small addition but I done like chipped powder coated stuff so its a must. So that really it for the plan of attack. I have been on the hunt for Milles breaking and as they are far and few between, I have a few bits and pieces I would like to get, so if anyone has anything to offer, let me know. Items like: -Clip On's, left and right - aftermarket like R&G -Headlight - mine has a lot of stone chips so if not mad expensive, i'd love to replace mine with a clean one. -Any Carbon bits and pieces -Aftermarket Clutch Slave Cylinder - Anything else that may be a nice addition. Thanks a million for reading my post and as said, all the advice supplied would be greatly appreciated. Kev |

Things like bearings are generic . Aprilia don't make bearings ! It's far far cheaper (and better in quality) to buy from bearing wholesalers. Ie front wheel bearings 2 x 6005 2rs c3 2rs means 2 rubber seals C3 is the clearance of the bearing. There are plenty of threads on how to do the jobs. Ie rear linkage http://www.rsvr.net/sussy-link-write-up_topic9841.html As for decals aprilia would rinse your wallet for over £1000 and rarely send the correct items, and you wait ages too.... Price indicator https://www.ultimateparts.net/aprilia/p.php?i=364 Aprilia about 4 years ago doubled their prices overnight ! It's best to go to http://www.apriliaperformance.co.uk they do many parts and are great for advice. Good luck ! posting pics are easy just save pictures to photobucket and post the link |

Careful polishing the swingarm as it is anodised, many people use the image works and the quality is very good as for chain and sprockets you can't go wrong with did chain and renthal or talon sprockets in 16/44.

The swingarm is silver anodised. If you polish it you will be forever polishing it!! Have it refinished in silver anodise or have it polished and clear coated. Just had mine done in titanium. I'll be listing photos soon. Bearings I got from ap and some from fowlers in Bristol

Thanks a million for the replies guys.
I thought as much about the decals but I also live by the moto of "you get what you pay for". I just didn't know whether £195 for a full set was over the odds or a fair cost. The images of the finished bikes seem good and the feedback online seems fair too. I just dont want to pay for a professional paint job and end up regretting doing something like skimping a few quid on decals and having issues down the line. For the Swingarm Polishing, I didn't realise that the swingarm was anodised. It is the same as the Frame and just thought that it was polished metal. Someone has put a few scrapes into the rear end of it so I have to get these sanded out so thought polishing would leave an original look. Are they really Anodised silver / polished looking from the factory? Reference the bearings, looks like ill just get them from similar sources as mentioned. I might just send Simply bearings a mail with the list and see what they come back with. I think I'll have to keep looking for the tutorials on how to do the swingarm bearings. I know, like most other jobs, they will probably be handy enough but I like knowing what to expect before I go to do the job. I assume that on both sides, the bearings are just pulled out and the needle ones pressed in and likewise for the roller bearings. Thanks again lads..... |

Yeah they are definitely silver anodised!!! Did a bit of research on this as mine was scratched and I didn't like the shiny finish anyway as it doesn't go well with the rest of my bike. If you strip it (lots of info online about that, including using oven cleaner, chemical reactions, weakening the swingarm!!!) and polish it the finish won't last as it will start to oxidise so you'll be left re polishing it!! I think ap may know someone who could reanodise it or use someone local who knows their onions.

The swingarm bearings weren't too bad to do, I used a bit of heat and drifted them from the opposing side. The needle bearing was a bit more of a hassle and I ended up using some heat and more or less destroying it out!!!

Thanks for the reply.
So titanium eh.......if I'm getting it anodised I may as well look at the colour options. I'm like you in so far as your opinion of the polished look. I'm not sure what colour would compliment the blue wheels and Haga scheme. When you get your images up I'd be Interested to see your finished arm... There's a crowd in Dublin called Graph Engineering or IMF.ie is another one based in Dublin. I'll send them an email for pricing tomorrow.....Thanks for your help.... |

Very nice.
It's a very good colour to go with the carbon fibre bits and bobs. Your wheels would be a similar colour to mine too so I think it's definitely a contender. Would be a nice change away from normal polished metal too. |

Redrat......black was definitely a thought but I was thinking that silver would make the carbon fibre pop just that little bit more. Seeing titanium suits well too. It doesn't take from the carbon fibre that I thought it might and it's something differant too. I love seeing tasty alterations like that. As long as the bike keeps it's original look to a point, it's all good.

I have carbon frame covers that we're on it when I bought it. Not a huge fan but they've grown on me. I was going to do the frame and swingarm this year but some work projects ran on and I didn't really start the tear down in time. Plus doing just the swingarm first I could assess what it will all look like done so the frame will get done over the next winter. I like black but the 2003 bikes are black so I didn't want something that I could buy or was a copy of something I could buy if that makes sense. Anyway I like it and I'll put some photos up when it's all done and back together

Wheels are also powder coated. If they are oz ones like mine they could welll be anodised also!!! The guy who does my stuff is really good with knowing what colours work. I can just leave him with stuff and give him an idea what I want it to look like!! I've yet to pick up some pink wheels or the like from him!!!

Cool, good basis for modifications. Mine was like that but with a Edwards cube paint job. Now has oz wheels, front forks done gold anodise like the ohlins and rebuilt, hyperpro shock, carbon everywhere, tigcraft exhaust, chip, airbox, etc etc!!! Once you start it's hard to stop! Luckily I have a missus who is very understanding!

Regarding the swing arm bearings... when I did mine one side (can't remember which) wasn't throwing up any bearing that matched the code on the side of said bearing so I bought from fowlers I think.
As said above one side can be drifted out from behind but the other had to be sacrificed, you might possibly get it with a slide hammer rigged up. Best of luck with it all. |

So to add an update, I have been compiling a few bits and pieces.
I found this Mille breaking on Ebay: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/APRILIA-RSV-MILLE-R-RSV-1000-TUONO-SIDE-COVERS-FAIRINGS-MESH-AND-MOUNTING-BOLTS-/201825271192?hash=item2efdb93d98:g:lsMAAOSw2gxYn0nV I bought: -the headlight because mine was pitted all over the place -the black undertray because mine is red and the bike is going black to I thought instead of painting red to black, just buy a black one while it was going. -bought the clipons with the R&G ends on them. Also bought: -Fowlers full bearings and seals for dogbone linkage and swingarm -All balls bearings for front and rear wheels. -small rubber grommets to go into the fairing infills over the coils and the other side (yes, im looking at the fine detail.... ![]() -Full stainless mixed bolt kit for frame and engine, to replace any dirty one. -stainless pinch bolt set for the front. -black glass fibre exhaust wrap, 1.5" x 20mt with ties -Reservoir socks: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/371857357429?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT -1 x Mirror Insertion replacement kit to replace mine that is broken. I still need: -Samco or similar Silicone hose set -Adjuster bolts for the rear swingarm -Lots of carbon bits -other things I am yet to think of..... ![]() ![]() I have decided that the pic above of the Titanium swingarm looks that good and unique, that I am completely robbing the Idea and have lined up a company to soda blast mine and powdercoat it the same. I am keeping my Sachs shock but going to have the spring powercoated purple. As mentioned before, if anyone is looking to offload any bits n pieces that may go well with the bike, let me know what you have. The project continues. |
