Hi guys,
a quick question;
I have a 2006 RSV1000R and I was giving the brown connector a check over, it looks brand new, no apparent problems. I had engine running, for about 5 minutes at this point, the charge voltage was showing as 13.7-14.1 on the dash.
The thing that is worrying me is that the three yellow stator wires were "hot", OK to touch briefly but too hot to hold onto!
Is this normal, or am I right to be worried?
Any comments greatly appreciated.

Cheers Tom.

Actually, heat from the stator.  the stator works at 100% from the start due to the design of the reg/rec.  Its a cheap solution for mass market that a lot of manufactures have used, called a 'shunt' type regulator.  What is not used by ancilliaries such as charging, lights etc, is shunted to earth which generates a lot of heat at the rectifier.

The stator is rated at 500 Watts, so is effectively generating 500W of heat energy by creating current that effectively gets shunted to earth.  There are other 'design' issues with the fixed magnet flywheel and also the windings of the stator, but ultimately, from the stator through to the heat sink on the RR will get hot.

There are modifications that you can make, however, you would have to consider how many miles/year you do and whether your going to keep it long term....if its short term ownership only used occasionally, then its probably not worth doing as stators can last over 20K miles.

Just sort out your wiring, ensure the connectors are clean and VERY secure (tight) and possibly re-route the stator cable (3 yellows) along the front of the engine along the top of the rads, not between the V's.

There are a couple of posts regarding 'series' regulators using MOSFET technology, its a kind of recognition that shunt types are crap and have blighted many manufacturers, not just aprilia.  the is enough info in the post for you to make up your mind about this!

If you want more info, PM me or BB1000, as we both went down the path of change!

At the time I didn't realize there were two Brown Connectors. I read a lot on this forum and had a look for the offending item with the fairing off...Oops! Wasn't too difficult to repair, just the fact that you don't have a lot of wire lenght to play with.  A bit fiddly.

Yup, crap design, connectors crap as well, spring pressure on contacts crap too, all a burnt stator waiting to happen sadly.

Your on the path to sorting it out though!
