can i fit these cans without having to mess with ecu?
aprilia dealer says £40 charge for work on ecu if fitted.
i dont really want it tuning to suit cans as i will take them off when i go abroad(save them being nicked)..

You really should get the ECU changed to MAP 2.
This will increase the fueling and more importantly the CO level as the RSV runs lean as standard to pass emmision regs.
The other upside to getting the ECU remapped is that it makes slow town riding far better.
I have a set of Akros and the ECU remapped and i noticed the improvement.

The bike is supplied ex-factory with the Siemens ECU set in Map 1 mode - this is a self learning mode which adjusts the bike to prevailing conditions every time it is ridden - it also uses the Lambda sensor in the exhaust to monitor emissions and adjust accordingly - I believe it is called a 'closed induction loop'.
Map 2 is the 'race Map' and disables the Lambda sensor - it is important to switch to this mode as the bike will not then re-adjust every time you ride it - if you fit a Power Commander for example, whatever settings are put in by the Dyno Centre or downloaded by you will remain in effect - if you were to do this in map 1, the system would simply overide them and re-adjust itself.
The bike is perfectly rideable in Map 1 mode with race cans fitted and will start etc however it may not run very smoothly or at least as smotthly as you would like - I mention this as it is perfectly OK to fit race cans and then arrange to go along to your dealer for a Map reset a week or two later.
