It seems that this isn't best done using the basic by sight/ear/mercury columns methods. Does anyone know a competent mechanic/engineer in the Plymouth - Bude - Camelford area who has done this on a Gen 1/2 V-twin I don't want to pay someone to learn how to do it on my bike!

Just have a run out to Griff and treat it like any other run. I can't see why you would do anything else. Ask if he is still doing his service tours although I've not heard of any recently |

With fuel stops, it's going to be almost five hours of motorway tedium just to get there...which would probably mean an overnight stop. My fault I know, for living out on a limb!

 I do get that but I live in the North East and wouldn't think twice about travelling down having already experience the huge improvement when Griff previously did my TB balance. |

| It isn’t hard. Any bike garage with take off pipes and a gas analyser can easily do it. 3.5% front cylinder, 4% rear. Leave the air screws alone unless they are radically out. |

I agree as most don’t stagger the cylinders etc but if getting to somewhere sensible isn’t an option geographically a local with the gear should be able to do a half decent job.

an independent ducati mech. should have the take off pipes needed

No recent knowledge of them but not a great rep historically. Having said that they can’t really mess up a tb setup. ( I would hope )

Update. The coughing and banging got worse. Turned out the spark plugs were coming undone! Fitted new ones...and it turns out the 'retorquing spark plugs' is actually a service task in the manual. Never known this before...changing yes, cleaning yes (in the days of leaded petrol), but retorquing...?
