I can get a v nice Gen 1 Mille R and not be skint or get a RSV4 and be poor. The RSV4 is the heart choice because it just sounds so awesome and is stupidly fast. I know its the better bike

That said it depends how good a v4 you can afford. The potential failures on them are substantially more costly than a v2 so for me personally I wouldn’t touch a high mileage or poor history v4. 

I agree Spoonz, if Im going to get a RSV4 it would ideally be a 17-18 with less than 5k miles and good history. If I do say to hell with the budget and go for the V4 I was going to ideally get the valve clearances checked as part of a pre-purchase inspection. Is this a good way of buying a sound engine RSV4?

There is always a certain leap of faith with any used bike but services done on time and a generally very tidy bike when you look really closely in hidden places  ( underside of swingarm and linkage and back of engine etc ) are always a good sign.

clucthless up and downshifts while keeping the throttle pinned, traction control is very dialable and will give you confidence like you never felt on any other bike.

to be quite frank the gen1s can be outmatched by a good 750 and at Snetterton the R6s will give you a proper run for you money, my gen 2 never ran right and my gen1 which was a low miale clean example had its quirks and let me down twice, i got the v4 is 2020 and its been faultless an absolute dream.

if your going for a RSV4 it needs to be the facelift 17 plus model the bikes got a lot cheaper to run maintain and a heap load more reliable 17 onwards i have recently bought a brand new v4 so mine is goign to be sold shortly but i wont own another sport bike.

a lot of people have opionions but have never riden a V4 - i also have a new V4s and a slew of other sport bikes, the RSV4 is the best biek i have ever owned.

as i said a lot of people have comments about this and that, but i have owned all 3 main generations of RSV1000 in my opinion the V4 makes the mille and gen 2 seem like old 600s - in the bhp dept that is.

I’ve a V4 Tuono and so it’s down on Jimmy’s beast, but it still would run circles around both my Gen1’s , Gen2’s and dare I say it even my big bore on handling even though it was proper set up and super quick compared to a standard gen2. 

Even my gen2 proper sorted race bike would be devoured by my Tuono out the box. 

They are night and day different. I couldn’t deliver pizza’s on it without them being destroyed in the process. 

Anyone got any thoughts on a 1060 RSV vs a 2017 RSV4 on the road? How close would they be? How do the torque figures compare?

Valve check is only as good as the person doing the work and a dealership with a sale pending on the outcome???

In most cases you will have a 3 month warranty. It may pay to have an independent expert carryout a PPI or negotiate a discount to cover inspection and valve check by a brand expert post purchase.

Buying new is difficult buying used must be a nightmare!

Reference power - sometimes less is more and I say this as an owner of '22 Tuono V4 & '23 RSV4 - currently looking for a 600cc bike to ride on track!

It depends on what you want. The V4 will always be faster and better even against a big bore though less noticeably on the road as you can’t race everywhere, the RSV4 still produces around 45-50bhp more at the wheel. 

My big bore 145 @ wheel jimmys V4 193@ wheel. Same as track. The Tuono less so as it’s ‘tuned different’ but the chassis, electronic suspension, shifter, blipper, all the rider aids flatter you, and now I don’t notice they are there and they inspire confidence. 

Spoonz already points out it’s an evolution and it improved things over its previous life span for the years you are considering. 

How much of a difference you will notice riding about with your mates between all of them depends on you and what you enjoy. 

I loved my twins but for what I get from riding the V4 can do it. 

And same with smaller capacity bikes. The best racing I ever had was on a cbr400. Grin like a looney and on track days you could go around much bigger stuff and just have fun. 

Have fun is what it’s about and you won’t be disappointed by any of the bikes so long as power and speed is not the priority. 

Also def have valves checked. I brought my V4 Tuono 2020 new and Griff checked them at 2998 miles and two inlets were out (tight). 

just from the traction - wheelie control and braking power alone you would decimate a 1060 you would make it look silly. my gen 1 used to really struggle once you got to 145-150 mph it used to creep on the other hand 180mph on a rsv4 is a number that flies past in a blink.

the cluster and controlls are really intuitive and great when moving fast easily readable in any light gear indicator is always nice.

technology makes you faster, one of my fave looking bikes is the gen 2 with the gold frames, what really made me want to go for a RSV4 is i got showed up pretty badly by a friend with a 636 on the road, it completely killed the older bikes for me - worried about it being this 200bhp monster, click it on rain mode, crack the traction control and wheelie control to 10 and it will ride like a r6.  im also 6ft and the rsv4 fits me perfectly and the reach is vastly more comfortable than either my gen 1 or 2 was
