I feel I’d benefit from everyone’s opinion plz..
I run an SV650 for a giggle but it died and I’m pondering the cause.
Here’s what’s happened.
Running fine and fitted a new lith ion battery.
The other day on a short ride the tacho died and came back to life a few times.
Parked it up and it refused to turn over - long story short the battery failed - now confirmed by the manufacturer who said that when a lith ion breaks down you often get a massive voltage spike.
In the process of dying it seems to have killed part of the ignition system.
The rec/reg only does charging so with a new lead acid battery it spins up ok but no spark.
It’s getting fuel and the coils check out so, CDI?
Fuses are all good.
Can anyone think of anything else that the dying battery would have taken out with it when it went FUBAR?

Opinions welcomed at this stage.

Thanks

J

Have you got healthy sparks on both pots?

I know this is no help but this is the 2nd dead sv650 I have encountered or heard about in as little as a week is it a 2001?

No spark - we are devoid of sparks.
And it’s a T reg - mid 1999

There’s no doubt that the battery failure killed it, just don’t know what exactly is dead yet

Sounds like the CDI.

Also sounds like alarming news for anyone with an electric car, and might possibly explain why my wife's mobile phone suddenly went mad and then died.

A bit too late tohelp I suspect but this is common and there's two things to watch for.

First is the charging system may not be forward compatible with LithIon batteries.  The main point affecting both SV and DL650's which have been left standing for any length of time is they suffer with rectifier failures plus the stator can burn out.  This happened on one I bought so had it replaced under used warranty.  Rectifier fried itself melting feed wires from stator.  Replaced both and used an uprated stator (375A from 325A standard one).  S5tandard stators or older Mk1/2 SV's and DLs were under rated so adding any electrical extras could prematurely end them.

Your symptoms point to this type of failure.  Bike will stutter, perhaps go onto one cylinder and tacho/instruments will die.  Charging the battery if it isn't toast (on mine the rectifier failure meant the battery was drained in one 5 minute ride and dropped some cells) will see instruments work again but bike won't fire.  If you run it, you'll fry the battery .

Replacement stator/rectifier for uprated ones is circa £350 plus labour.  That and a new battery will rescue the bike which should stay reliable for years.  These bikes have covered 100K miles trouble free and are as reliable as they come bar stator issues.

That is the concern I raised when people first started talking about lithium batteries on here.

Power tools all have electronic circuitry to control how the battery operates, including isolating the battery when they get low to prevent use that may damage either the battery or tool. I would imagine that any modern bikes that come with lithium as standard do too. Do our bikes that were designed in the 1990's? I doubt it!

I don't think that many do of that age.  Modern bikes like the bmw's have a canbus system and are configured for use with pB or Lithium as the charging system compensates for the difference in charging current needed.   The other issue with LIon batteries is that they're seriously affected by cold weather and could result in cold starting issues, not the healthiest thing for sprag clutches!
