Evening all, just starting to think about dusting off the track bike for this year Wink, bought my gen 1 mille track bike back end of last year, managed to get two track days on her Cadwell and Mallory.  Looking to get some advice on tyre sizes for the Mille rear, 190/180 ?...... 55/50?  Im an intermediate level track rider.  Stepped up to the mille from a gixxer 600 k1.

Currently running a 190 55 Bridgestone hyper sport evo with a 120 70 on front.

Wondering what folks experiences are with different rear tyre sizes, handling, pros cons etc for the mille.

thanks Ross

Hi

Always interesting debate but either width and in a 55 or possibly a 60 profile for track use. You will need some more links most likely to run a 60 profile however. It can rub on the swing arm in some cases.

I’ve used 190/55 loads of times and 60’s (possibly 180 but I forget). Couldn’t say one was light and day better than the other but the 60’s are more common due to use in BSB. I can’t recall what I used on the zx10 last year but both front and rear profiles were different to what I’d used in the past and again for my ability I didn’t feel a difference. Maybe if I swapped back to back all day I would.

I do like how a 180, 60 profile handles and feels but it does fractionally touch the chain and it’s a 520 chain, ideally needs a couple of extra links in as well other than that a 190/55.

Same tyres you'd have used on your K1 probably. If 180/60 rubs your swingarm then either new chain or swap the front sprocket for a 15. Width wise with Pirelli/Metzeler that always measure more like 190 for a 180 nominal, I have no issue with the chain. Could maybe go 200 at a push. But then I don't have the plastic guard that goes over the top of the rear sprocket. Just the shark fin but underneath. Not sure how much the chain guard sticks out and whether that may catch.
