So there I was at the age of 24, just passed my direct access and two days later was the proud owner of an 03 RSV Mille - no test ride, no nothing. The reason I bought the bike? It was different to the cliche GSXR's and common Honda's.
So just under two years on, I was approached by the Iron Maidens all female endurance racing team to see if i'd ever thought about racing? Not really, at this point i'd done three trackdays and so far not crashed it - so I thought why not! I enjoyed trackdays, felt settled on the bike and quite frankly the idea of a female team sounded quite fun. There's been comments so far but the key idea of this is that i'm not racing because i'm fast, i'm racing because I want to be faster.
At this point its worth mentioning that i've obviously not done all the following work myself, massive thank you to wigginsjp, aka Wiggy, AKA totally awesome boyfriend for his hard work, patience and continuous support.
Modifications and adjustments to what was a bog standard 03 -
- Gearing 16/44 - Redrat modded collector - Griff open airbox mod - Akrapovic RSV4 end can, modified with dual core - Oberon clutch slave - Carbon front mudguard and swingarm protectors - 180/60 rear tyre - lengthened chain to 110 and remove rear hugger - Lockwire oil filter, sump, oil tank and filler cap - Carbon engine covers - Race fairings all round (removal of side stand and full race bellypan) - Soft compound renthal grips - Tank stomp grips - Front suspension overhaul
So you ask 'whats involved in endurance racing? What are the other girls riding?'
The series which i'm going into is the No Limits Endurance Series, races range from three hours to eight hours with a minimum of two riders per team, and a maximum of four. Depending on the length of the race the team i've joined will typically have their riders do anything from 20 minute stints to 45 minute stints, at which point there's a changeover of transponder in the pits before the next rider heads out.
The other girls bikes include R6's, GSXR 750 & 1000 and Triumph 675's - racing in both the 600cc and 1000cc class.
Engine covers, lock wiring and tyre choice are compulsory (Pirelli or Metzeler), as is a full bellypan which will catch fluids.
So whats a project thread with no pictures? From past to present, including some recent trackday ones on the OEM fairings. I plan to keep this thread updated with news and progress, you can also follow the team directly on facebook.

Hi Mark, do you mean the swingarm covers or engine covers?
If it's the engine covers then motoforza - https://www.motoforza.cz/produkty" rel="nofollow - https://www.motoforza.cz/produkty they do some great stuff! They're also Moulded from originals (indent of the Aprilia stand on the inside) so the fitment is great, they're also carbon over Kevlar - really impressed with the quality

Well done good on ya mikaela.
My advise as a trackday junkie is if you haven't already service the rear shock or upgrade, and wrap the rear header. I can feel the shock over heating(loosing damping) at the end of a 20minute track session.
Good luck

Thank you Warnz :) will definitely get the rear shock rebuilt at some point! Would be tempted to upgrade for a heavier Spring but it's not worked out to well on my gen2, still think I prefer the feel of the standard shock.
More goodies arrived today and last night, bought a tail fairing off of Stewart Gardiner to replace the OEM one, need to do some minor repairs and fit a rain light. Also had a belly pan come through from race candy - very impressed! Need to get it sanded down, painted and snickered up

Haha Mark, and I can't even edit it!
Markrsvr- I bought these from Race Candy - guy called John runs it and was very helpful - I went with RC because feedback in the past has said their fitment and quality is excellent for the Aprilia!

Cheers yes heard these was good myself. since ARD stopped making them for gen 1 think these are the next best.
Mine are passed repair now only so much fibreglass you can do some places it's about 15mm thick bits missing.
Thanks again

My top fairing is also from Race Candy who are about 3 miles down the road from me,good kit,but I did have issues fitting my screen as the holes were the wrong pattern.
This hadn't been an issue in the past as John sends them out undrilled normally, but as a favour he drilled them in for me off the marks the mould left, this also fitted the old screen he has as a template
He sorted it out brilliantly though and mould has now been modded,I also bought an Airblade Race screen from him as well at cost, these have to be seen to be believed. They make the Aprilia oem crap look like a sheet of polythene.
He might not be quick as it's a small family concern, just him and his partner and he's massively overworked but he's a genuine guy that cares about his customers.
For anyone who's interested the Gen 1 race bodywork is a full belly pan moulded off the road pan but laid up in one piece instead,I think he said he blanks off the oem holes and dams the rear to make it race ready.
The belly pan attaches as oem and uses the original air tubes and side panels, the nose fairing ( that I got) is from an OE mould but without a headlight aperture.
On the down side he did say he was thinking about selling up in the not to distant future so the supply of gen1 race bodywork could get scarce.
If anyone gets in touch with him tell him Ian from Abergele sent you

Great thread!
So the riders do their 20-45 min stints on their own bikes Rsv, gsxr 6/1000 etc? Sounds like very interesting and entertaining racing! Are other race teams similarly diverse with bikes they are running?
------------- Question everything.
|
Posted By: Mikaela
Date Posted: 30 Jun 2016 at 17:09
Hi Diablo, Yes typically they're 20-45 minute stints on their own bike, the group has three teams running for the rest of the season - one team in the 600 class (2x triumph 675's and 1x R6), and two teams in the 1000cc class - 1x GSXR 750 2x GSXR 1000, 1x R6 and mine :)
Big lads racing used to run two gen2's quite successfully, they've since moved onto BMW1000RR's and a ZX10 I believe - there is only one other Aprilia in the class as far as I'm aware and that's an RSV4. In all honesty the successful teams all run BMW's and ZX10's in the bigger class, with lots of R6's around in the 600cc class. There's a couple of brand new R1's and a few panigales dotted around. Lots of people with lots of money, all well and good if you can afford to replace these expensive bikes, at Donington a few weeks back I saw two ZX10's where the only decent thing left of them were the frames!
The team are racing at Snetterton this Saturday for an 8hr, it's free entry if any of you are local and want to pop down!

Some friends of mine used to run in that on Sv thous, they went under the name of Pirate Racing 2 so you may come across Emma in your races although I'm not sure if she still rides competitively.

That thought did flit through my mind for a few seconds but there are many reasons not to want to get involved. The main one being I've never liked working with glass mat, second being it takes up a lot more space than I have available and thirdly I hate dealing with the public.
I do hope to build a workshop alongside the house but the idea is to get some metal cutting machinery in if I do.

As a thread update, one of the last things to do is fit this, will probably mount it on the battery tray, just got to decide what to take off the clip on to fit the switch - troublesome as still wanting to daytime MOT the bike. Also want to use one of these buttons for a pit lane limiter, just need to find a 'how to' guide

How did the racing go any good

Racing was great yesterday, I spent eight hours on pitwall as I wasn't riding - hard work! So team 631 (triumph 675 x2 and one R6) came second in the newcomer class which means they're currently fifth in the championship - great news! Team 136 had some issues, snapped gear shifter so black flagged, GSXR with a blown gasket and one rider coming back from injury, they finished down the pack but for those girls it's just fun. Main thing is no accidents or serious bike issues. We were lucky with the weather - one downpour which lasted all of a minute, the track was dry within ten minutes so no need for wets.
On the bike prep side James has been hard at work repairing and respraying the tail panel we got off Stewart - here's some pics -

So trials and tribulations with the bellypan. Because of the gearing and 60 profile tyre I'm running we had to make up some longer brackets for the fixing to the rearsets. With the new brackets we have clearance from the pan but it's debatable whether it's enough for tyre warmers - the sage continues! Will put a 15/42 gearing on and see how we go!
Clearance before the brackets - http://s1054.photobucket.com/user/mkg21089/media/2639F773-24F4-4743-A030-FD21BF251786_zpsyldlwjno.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

And the brackets in question (which James lovingly made from exhaust bracket bars and a Dremel) http://s1054.photobucket.com/user/mkg21089/media/49601C9C-541D-449A-B1F1-66B08E8D9D60_zpsyfahnidw.jpg.html" rel="nofollow">

Is the race belly pan longer for the catch tank?
|
Posted By: Mikaela
Date Posted: 06 Jul 2016 at 14:55
I don't think it's necessary longer but it has the lip at the back which of course the standard one doesn't- this is what's catching. Too that with running 60's, changed gearing and allowing for tyre warmers then it proving tricky.
Need to play with the gearing and do a mock run at home with tyre warmers and see how we go!

I have a race belly pan and it's very close bit like the first picture.
The oem belly pan doesn't have the catch pan as said above as long as it's not touching shouldn't be a problem

I've got the full race bellypan though, which has the catchment and is touching ;)
I've got clearance, just maybe not enough for warmers

So tried the warmers on this eve in preparation and we have clearance! For now I'll run with a 16/44. Still waiting on panels to come back with the numbers on but for now she's ready!

The black and pink does contrast well, and the Akrapovic looks right at home there, with a decent length too. Does it pass noise regulations ok? I notice you have the std can on usually?

Hi Guys, the akrapovic runs like a dream, it's definitely much smoother and doesn't limit the power as much as the standard one. This used to be my old road can but I've decided I'll run it for racing. First time I fit it it blew to pieces, I had to get it resleeved and internal core built within so it could handle the twin - aside from that it looks fab!

I did Cadwell a few months back with the 16/44 and found all it wanted to do was wheelie round the bends and try and flip at the mountain, for now I'll stick with the 16/44 as all the races left this season as fast straights - I don't want to get annihilated anymore than I usually do by the GSXR's and R1's 😂

I use 16/44 at cadwell like it alot that gearing over the mountain try just lifting your arse of set abit get over front the bike will wobble abit but with having no weight on it soon sorts it's self out bit like riding a crosser off road hope that helps

Race day is here, never done Silverstone and unfortunately they had to cancel the test day yesterday due to the Grand Prix last week - therefore first time on Silverstone int this morning in qualifying, went from a 1.36 to a 1.30.
Lost a fairing bolt, locktighted the rest in and James is currently tightening the suspension on the front.

So we finished the race! My team mate with the 750 GSXR overheated on her final 30 mins so I had to head out again - seriously hard work, shoulders mega hurt today and will definitely be investing in a double bubble, the hanger straight is hard work without one. Fastest lap of the day for me was 1min25.1 , half a second slower than the GSXR 750 and three seconds faster than the R6 5EB.
Scraped the belly pan which is annoying, will look to try and heighten it slightly. Will be changing the front sprocket to a 15, taken the rear shock off to be rebuilt and will be going for race sintered SBS pads for the next round (brands in September).
Also picked up a lump of rubber in the rear brake, good job I don't use it or depend on it! Road pads were a bit of a mistake, final finishing position - 49 out of 54 :) pics to follow

Just received the 15 tooth front sprocket from redrat - thank you very much! Look forward to trying it out :)
Also update on the rear shock from MCT Suspension in Suffolk, as you all know I'm running a Sachs unit, feedback is a revalve, servicing with air and oil, upgraded spring and new seals. We had the Ohlins discussion but after these upgrades then the Sachs will perform as well as a standard Ohlins unit.
Next stop is ceramic coating the exhaust headers and collector then hopefully getting out before test day at Brands in September

So I got the shock back ;) serviced, revalved and rebuilt internally with an Ohlins piston, also went for the heavier weight spring powder coated in metallic blue. I really can't recommend MCT enough, they did this in five days and price wise was very reasonable, they also sent me a spec card including settings for wet and dry!

That does look good, surprising the difference a freshly serviced and setup shock makes. I ceramic coated and wrapped the headers on mine and it does make a big difference to the rear shock, I can ride it for hours and the damping doesn't go off and hold the headers with the engine running.
|
Posted By: Mikaela
Date Posted: 03 Aug 2016 at 09:54
I've heard that they can loose dampening but I've literally never had a problem, track, racing at Silverstone, hard road riding for a few hours - never.
I'll get the headers coated at some point but only because it looks good and will help them last.

So after Snetterton on Tuesday - HUGE difference. The new RS pads from SBS were brilliant, infact on occasion i was nearly sat on the tank under heavy braking so I guess i need to work on my upper body strength a bit!
The rear shock after the rebuild and heavier spring was the biggest difference of all, I definitely feel I was quicker round the bends and the bike felt more planted both on acceleration and heavy braking.
It was my first time at snetterton and managed to get a video of the second session in inters, pics to follow -
