Just got back in from a day on Anglesey with my trackday buddy who did his ACU course and track lessons.
I sat in on the classroom session drinking their coffee & eating their biscuits as it was bloody cold outside.
Talk about a waste of time, even the guy running the course was apologetic almost,I did re learn about the flags though which was a bonus.
A pass was pretty much guaranteed if you weren't both chronically deaf & blind, only 16 out of 20 multiple choice questions to answer and we were told the answers in the briefings before hand
The track time was almost as farcical as really they just wanted to see that people could stay on their bikes without falling off.
Not so long ago you just sent off for your papers, had a medical and received your restricted license by return, join a club of your choice, send in an entry and Bingo ......you are now a racer
Apparently jumping through these hoops clears the ACU of liabilty should someone get it wrong and try to sue them.
On balance I think I prefer the way it used to be when I got my license.
Still it was a good day out and the weather cleared up nicely and my mate now has a racing license.
Think I'll stick to trackdays though

It did seem quite similar to me too, really not that difficult, they want you to pass and on track they just wanted to see you take some sort of racing line and not bin it. If you go into it with very little experience you will find that you are still separated from the fast riders, like on track days, the first test/practice day is when you really get to see what sort of level you are.

Very true, some of those today are in for a rude shock when they get blitzed on their first race/test day.
Russ should be ok as he's a capable inters/fast group level rider anyway as well as being IAM trained.
But I've heard it said there is a big a gap between fast group trackday riding and club racing as there is between novice and fast groups, don't know if that's true though.
In days past you just turned up and raced without any of the choices or distractions, sink or swim.

Rude shock is very apt, the friday test day was a scary experience, if you're in the fast group you will defintley be competative at club level, I've chosen inters for my next track session to see where I am.

We were discussing this in the van on the way home,Russ was told he aught to move out of the comfort zone of Inters as the faster guys will tend to pull you along and take you to the next level.
While I can believe this a lot of those guys also tend to be running slicks, and most use warmers even if not so I don't fancy trying and hang with them all the time as we use neither.

Imo I think moving up is good advice for a couple of reasons, he will get pulled along a little bit and get to see the lines faster riders are taking, don't know if it will apply to Russ but I also want more experience of being overtaken (and undertaken) at critical moments, like at full lean coming up to a late apex corner and someone stuffs it up the inside then goes slower than you, my first instinct was wanting to brake, not wise, so I need to practice changing lines mid corner, standing the bike up momentarily then back over.
Most do use tyre warmers, but not all will be on slicks, even when I raced there was a good mix of slicks and tyres like supercorsas, I was told that there is about a second a lap gain to using slicks but the operating temp is much narrower, so being slower anyway I've decided to stick with supercorsas for now.

There's also the let go/slide factor to slicks as in it happens a lot faster Your compounds in supercorsa's/racetecs n the like will be good enough for most ( superstock & supersport use them so there going to be good A)
I done a day last year where bsb ssk guys were on track testing it was good but FN SCARY the speed at the apex overtakes were quite ( brown pants moments ) but interesting watching how early n hard they get on the throttle out the corners

I once did one of those simulator things at a bike show and it was onboard with the then Kawasaki BSB riders during qualifying at Oulton.
Fark me,it was unbelievable how hard and early they had the throttle pinned. I ended up with a sore neck and feeling a bit sick when they opened the lid and let us out.
Massive respect, not many people can just disregard the survival instinct and go mad like they did.
