My first Aprilia
1989 280 Climber. Rotax rotary valve so the heritage is true Aprilia.

Actually i had just rebuilt it after having the frame powder coated.
Only trouble is i rebuilt it in the lounge which didn't go down great.
It got used though see. Every weekend we were competing rain or shine. Trials actually felt clean after motocross. Shame i can't do a stand up Wheelie on my RSV. [:)]
As you can see i was a fashion Icon in 1989.

Nice bike. Is it the 1st generation engine or the newer version.

It was a 06 550 and i didn't keep it for long.
Never gave me the feeling that i would get home on it, just used it for track days but it had amazing power to weight ratio 67bhp & 117kg.

does anybody know anything about the sxv/rxv 450/550
which to buy? if they're the same bike apart from the wheels and the capacity difference? spoonz, you mention first and second series, what are the differences? anybody own one? i'm toying with the idea of getting one. saw one today and it looked like a top bit of kit. wouldn't sell my tuono for it. i'd appriciate any honest opinions etc

The latest engine is a bit more robust. The service life of the top end in particular has been dramitically increased.
There were also problems with the seal on early crankcases. They used a gasket sealer that didn't stand the heat for that long.
If you look at a secondhand one look very closely at the oil for signs of water. If there is it's a sign it has this problem. Only fix is to split the cases and redo the seal.
The 2 capacities are basically the same motor for the most part but i have never ridden one to say which is best. My experience with offroad bikes always told me that power is for talent. An inexperienced rider to the scene will go faster over a lap on the smaller bike. You more likely to use it's full potential and it's less likely to bite you when you get tired.

quote:SXV is a real love/hate type of bike. I never had anything bad go wrong with mine but alot of people did and it turned into a warranty issue if you had it deristricted. The 450 was miles better on the track because the power was more usable,550 would highside you if it didn't have a throttle cam fitted to calm it down but made a better road bike. The sealant issue was mostly found on bikes made in early 06. Starting issues were either due to poor setup at the dealers or owners cranking the starter until it burnt out, a well setup map that looked for the correct crank position before firing made a big differance. I had some great times on mine but their is no such thing as a reliable Supermoto. |

i'd prob use it 99% on the road. i've got a ktm 250 for trailriding and i've done the racing thang, (i wasn't very fast). anybody know if the sxv/rxv are the same bike aside from the wheels and final gearing?? rxv's seem cheaper

They have different wheel/tyre sizes obviously but the sxv has a different exhaust and compression ratio with a higher max rpm for the fast straights in Supermoto.
Generally it's the same bike.
