I was born in '81, so the vintage stuff I've been entertaining myself with during the lockdown has been early 90's stuff, particularly Suzuka 8hr coverage but I reckon I could get into the 70's/80's racing, it somehow seems more impressive to hustle those bikes around at pace!

Not a project but lots of ongoing mods and maintenance over 35 years ownership

And this was built up over 5 years starting with a set of crankcases and a frame. A bit of a bitsa but fun to ride on green lanes or B roads.

Having a Bridgeport Mill and a Triumph 2000 lathe helps too, this is the mill, I have added Digital axis readouts to both the Mill and Lathe which I wonder how I did without.

Ah,all that takes me back, from the Commando which takes me back to living down the road from the Norton dealer and seeing the first models in the showroom ( circa 1969?) proper m/cycles.

If I were to ever buy another bike it would be something along those lines not a modern one

Right up to the Bridgeport I learnt my trade on.

Although how you manage without a DRO I can't imagine, even the first one I worked on had the readout boxes on each axis then I was supplied new ones every year or so with Heidenhain DRO and power feeds.

I've done the whole VMC and EDW thing now with multi axis CNC and mega expensive CAD/CAM programming suites.

It would be nice to have a workshop with an old Bridgeport just for old times sake

The backlash on the Bridgeport was bad, the M head is good being from 1943 Smile or so but the Alcock & Shipley hortizontal mill from 1942 it's on was bad on Y and Z axis which had no gibs. X has gibs so I could adjust it to a manageable level.

This is the Alcock mill from the brochure. The M head is mounted on the top support shaft using an adaptor. To get the backlash manageable on Y and Z I drilled and tapped through the axis inserts and then used hardened bolts to adjust the clearance plus added axis locks so once the DRO tells me I am in the correct position I can lock all 3 axis or combination of axis before cutting
. Alcock & Shipley eventually got taken over by Bridgeport USA.

Then you can make stuff like this brake adaptor ring to allow a Ducati Hypermotard disc to be mounted to a Norton hub.

I really miss not being able to machine any odd bits and pieces these days.

The last place I worked was very high tec and always on a time deficit so finding capacity on VMC's was always a problem.

The previous manual shop I was at for most of my working life would be ideal for my needs now

I can remember the fun I used to have on the x axis when climb milling 20mm thick ali plate with a 20mm E/mill   Big smile    Snatch??   Never mind the cutter pulling down in the R8 collet Cry

I tightened the gib up and used the split nuts to get rid of all the lash I could but it made the extremes of travel very tight as a result

No bike projects but I bought an ex gas board Vivaro van last summer & have been converting it into a day/camper van. I haven't enjoyed doing something so much in years! Might do another one.

Not the softest! It was so high our heads touched the roof & your feet barely reached the floor. Spent 2 days slicing 100mm out of the frame to lower it.

Still I expect that still works well,we had a pair of small Myford's at my last place and they were very capable and you could work to microns on them even after years of abuse.

Just to qualify that statement.   A turner could work to microns,I think lathes are the Devil's playthings,it's just unnatural having the work turning and the tool stationary Shocked   I stayed as far away from them as possible

The engineers where I worked had Harrison lathes and they were probably 40 years old and well worn but they could still turn out incredible quality work, they new how much the lathes were out and could compensate for it, they then bought some Chinese lathes and the guys hated them, you only had to look at the casting to tell how accurate they were, the whole build quality was garbage.

Sounds about right,my old place were seduced into buying XYZ kit as "Mclaren use them and rely on them "  Don't know what they used them for but is wasn't anything precise, that's for sure.

They do do sponsor very good corporate track days though

Managed to get a bit done on the scooter

Already typed out for a scooter forum so copied over

I posted up a while ago regarding a rusty series 1 lambretta , I bought it with the frame loop chopped off and that was beyond repair so got another that had had the side panels welded on , so chopped those off , still rough but better .. had the frame blasted and it was a little dimpled in one place with rust so my mate attacked it today at his work .. we respected the 2 metre rule

I bolted on the frame loop as the frame still had the spot welded plates from where it was removed from the old loop so this lined everything up and he welded the  acquired loop on

The main frame had a heavy dimpled section so I made a plate up this was drilled for plug welds and was tacked ,plugged and seam welded

There were a few fatigue cracks around some holes that I got him to fill up on the rear of the loop

The front frame had a hole  so I made a plate up a couple of weeks ago I had drilled it so it could be plug welded then sealed

After all this was done I gave it a quick blast of grey I had laying around to protect if for now

Just need to get all the bodywork together now so I can start thinking about a ratty paint job and actually putting the thing together.

A good day in lockdown 👍👍

Photos haven’t come out in order but you get the gist

Phot

It’s got a fully rebuilt 150cc block with an alloy 200cc top end that’s been ported

Will have an expansion pipe and big carb

Standard front end

Got nothing to do so decided to make a patio for the missus in a neglected part of the garden (little does she know it's really a bike washing area) . There was a 2 week wait for the materials to arrive so in the mean time I broke up a stack of old bricks I had for hardcore.
forensic anthropology benefits
To be continued.
