Right, been watchin MotoGP, World and British superbikes for some years now but am still unsure as to why riders take their foot of the peg as they're approaching a bend.
It's not a kind of air brake is it? Or maybe Betty Swollocks?
Anyone help me out here?

Think they are shifting their weight to aid cornering, would seem a bit alien to a mere mortal like me, esp. under the forces they endures when braking, something in the region of 1.5G

I 'm probably wrong but It seems predominantly a left corner thing . I Also think that at the point they are shifting their weight into a left hander that they have their foot under the gear shift as changing down is an "up push "on a race shift .so maybe it's the fastest way to change down, move balance and get your foot back on the peg . On a left hander they will be weighting the right peg so perhaps to the riding Gods like Bayliss |

as I understand it - its so as not to stand on the gear lever and accidentally select another gear as they are tipping in.
