I emailed AF1 yesterday about their links and they're $50 plus $40 for postage to the UK. He said he had 80 pairs in stock and that if i put a bulk order in the postage would still be $40 for the lot. Should get them in 7 days. I'm happy to order some if people want and forward them on at whatever it ends up costing me. If we can get 5 orders for example they should come out at just over £30 per set. So at this price even if we get stung with any import duty or anything it would only push it up to about £40. Got to be worth it either way. See link to the plates below.
Spoonz, don't want to tread on your toes on this re the MPL links, so if you want to find out what's happening with those and allocate them first that's fine with me. On the other hand if you don't get any joy out of them i'm happy to order a set for you.
If anyone wants a set, then post here or drop me an email at danwain11@gmail.com.
Cheers,

Hi monkeeman, I've ordered three sets last night with the same idea as yourself. I'm having one set so there will be two others available (at cost including the postage, nothing will be made by me on the links). My thoughts are that these will do to get me back on the road, but will probably replace them if Mr Spoonz is successful with the titanium ones he's sourcing. Anybody interested in the two spare sets let me know by pm or put a post on here.

remember you may get hit for some customs duty with the higher value of several items. Import duty in theory is on over £7 that's not a personal gift or in an exempt category and import vat on over £18.If the duty is low they don't bother to collect but for several links they might. I had something for £265 a while back and got stung over £50 extra

I agree it's more likely that you'll get hit with a bit of duty the higher the cost of the shipment, but it should only push the cost of a set of 5 up from £30 to about £40 each at worst, still more than worth it for the peace of mind.
As for ordering a batch from AF1, As spooky has already ordered some i've reserved one of his sets so i'll not be ordering any anymore. Spooky has another set and Spoonz has 2 spare possibly coming from MPL that should go some way to satisfying the demand.
If there are still people needing links after this, there's nothing to stop someone else putting an order in to AF1, they did say that they had 80 sets left, and spooky should be able to give you an idea of final costs and any duty etc.
Sorry for any disappointment, but it is surely good news that now the worst case is a 7 day wait from the US.

Just had news from the bike shop, turns out the dog bone link was to blame
for the wear on my link plates ' just very slightly mismanufactured '. was his words, 7-10 days wait for bits, new dog bone, links, bearings. Then when I get it back shall put on the MPL versions. Should be good weather for a while !!!

Ok we have the lowdown on the Ti plates. it's not that straight forward though unfortunately.
There are 2 grades of 6/4 Ti we can have but 1 is 50% more expensive than the other and 2 finishes.
In the lower grade we are talking just over £50 a set but £100 for the higher grade.
The £50 set is about what i was expecting and my best option. These are water jet cut so no stress risers from machining. The 2 finishes determine the cleanness of the cut and only a few quid for the better option.
Now the main sticking point. Minimum order is 25 sets.
That's because the Ti plate comes in a minimum size which we have to cover the cost of.
The scary part is I will get a bill for £1300 + for the lower spec links or £2000+ for the higher spec and that is scary. Especially if people don't come through which has happened before.
So my thinking is that when we have enough takers and those takers have paid then the links will be made. I just can't risk doing it any other way.
So ask your mates and other forums and try and get the numbers and then it's ready to roll. Edited by Spoonz - 17 Mar 2008 at 23:59 |

Spoonz, what time scale are we looking at here for the manufacture of the Ti links. I've just had three sets of AF1 plates arrive yesterday (and you were right, got nabbed for the import tax and vat) of which I was going to use one set until you had any news regarding yours, and monkeeman and ROADKILL were the first to shout for the spare sets. I've sent them a pm to see if they would prefer the Ti route,. If you could give some idea of how long it will be, knowing you'll have to wait to get the 25 deffo's, then I'll throw a set of AF1's on for now to get me back on the road. But count me in for a set of yours. I know badger is after a set 'cause he asked me did I have any spare, looks like I might have now. I dont mind really I just wanted to get the bike back on the road asap and it seemed a sensible move to split costs and help somebody else out so they could have piece of mind when out riding.

The impression is that they will be as quick it takes to get the material once i give the go ahead but can't do that till i have 25 sets accounted for. I will take a spare af1 set if you have a spare till the Ti ones come along if there not already taken |

Spoonz, it looks like monkeeman and ROADKILL are still up for my spare ones so there wont be a set available for yourself. I was totally under the impression you were sorted with the MPL links or did that go tits up? If I'd known I would have ordered the five I was going to in the first place. As I said we got stung abit with import tax, vat and Parcelforce throwing a handling charge of 13 squids on the top but after all that they still worked out at £42 each set delivered to your uk address, which I didn't think was too bad. The girl at Parcelforce said that customs take parcels at random to see if their going to hit them for the extra dosh, must have been unlucky this time. If anybody would want me to place another order , while their waiting for the Ti plates to be made just let me know, (or it's piss easy to do yourselves) we might get lucky and sail through with no extra costs next time. One thing is for sure, AF1 can deliver parts all the way from the States far quicker than Aprilia Yorkshire can do in their own country. t**sers

too early to start sending money yet.
The situation is that we needed to get orders for 25 to make it happen.
One of the links was a one off design to lower the bike for a particular rider but his dealer Motosport in Warham pricked his ears as it's a regular request from owners buying new bikes to have the reduced height.
So basically Motosport have expressed an interest in making up the numbers if we can supply half normal/half lowering to them. I have asked the supplier to re qoute based on that but as yet they have not done so.
As to how long it might take is difficult. could happen in 10 days or 2 months.
