On the way home today the RSVR decided to drop its revs at each set of lights and cut out.
WTF?
I try to restart it but the dash flickers before painfully starting. I know this could be a dying battery and I might be shafting the sprag clutch but sat in a queue of traffic with nowhere to go I didn't have much choice. Checked the voltage drop on the battery last week with the readout and it seemed fine.
Managed to get the rest of the way home keeping the revs around 2K and it was ok (also seemed to sound a bit better decelerating - was I dreaming?).
Also when I start the bike in the mornings the warning triangle and the oil light come on for about 15-20 seconds - the revs limit to 3,000 from memory so I don't ride it till the lights go out. Never really sorted that fault out tho!
Any help welcome.
Also, i'm in Manchester where there appears to be a distinct lack of any Aprilia personnel. I usually go to MMC in Leigh but the garage has shut methinks.

Cheers Kawasaki
Took the bike out the next day and all seemed fine. Bloody intermittent faults! To add insult to injury, the rear tyre deflated very rapidly when I was about 2 mile from homes. Was an absolute b@stard to get home @9mph but it was either this or leave it in a bit of a dodgy area. The icing on the cake was when the fuel warning came on during the slog home!

Does sound like a batt or stator ouput issue. keep an eye on that dash voltage.
Try a new oil press switch for the warning issue. quite common for them to leak/fail. Only about £8 to replace.

read one of my posts about charging issues.....might be able to help you prove/disprove your electrics. If you need a rectifier, drop me a line, I still have one to sell..... :-) Aprilia charge £230...if you need a stator, Electrolux? sell em less than a ton delivered...again aprilia item is £230ish. Good luck. |

A mechanic told me it could be the stepper controller (??) The stator - I presume within the starter motor? I'm having the battery charged as we speak so I should know if this is the issue tomorrow. A service technician at the Rocket Centre in Blackburn told me the oil pressure switch could be leading to the starting issue or the cutting out fault. Can this be right? I can't see how the two would be linked. |

Thanks Spoonz.....you spotted my <cough> deliberate error.....DAMMIT!
As for the oil switch/cut out issue.....if you look at the wiring diagram, everything goes to/comes from the ECU....this little chappy may have within its amazing software code/PROM, to prevent damage to an engine on a low oil pressure HIGH....or low...its geek speak. I'm not sure what the ECU runs in terms of safety, but if it was me setting up a new ECU, this would be one parameter I would keep an eye on for sure.....I had an engine seize many moons ago on a VTR...doing 80...I'm not 100% positive, but I'm sure it was a genuine oil low pressure failure......oil stravation, vapour lock in the big ends and mains, and a nipped up engine to boot...me body surfing on the great tarmac wave. With hindsight, I would of liked honda to cut my engine or reduce it to the point the vapour lock would not of occured.......anyway....perhaps Aprilia have done this and what you are seeing is the symptoms of a good engineering solution, even if it does get up your nerves!
I'd get the oil sensor replaced and the wiring checked....easiest cheapest fix at £8....if its something else, at least you'll know that part of the system/warning actually works.
Good luck.

Just a quick one – can anyone remember from the top of their head how to adjust the clock and the rev limiter on the RSVR dash? I won’t have hold of my manual for a few days and it’s annoying me! Just charged the battery to see if that was the issue but the battery appears fully charged. The problem has not happened again…yet. Also, if anyone could give me an indication, how much is a replacement chain & sprockets? The guy who changed my tyre last week said, “You desperately need your rear sprocket changing”. Not sure to what extent it is shot but I thought I’d better play safe. Can’t believe it’s gone – the bike is only 3 ½ years old.
