it appears i have an oil leak but i cant find out where its comin from. every so often on startin theres a whiff of smoke come up from the bottom of the bike so my guess is its oil on the exhaust. had a look this mornin and the bottom of the right hand side of the engine is drippin in oil. over the winter i replaced the rear rocker cover gasket, checked that and its all dry around. there is a bit of oil in the airbox but its on the other side of the leak so im rulin that out. i thought it was the cover gasket on that side of the bike leakin as the join is covered in oil but further huntin led me to this spot which is where i think its comin from whats in that area that can leak ? ive tried lookin but theres so many pipes and wires in the way i cant find the source. also whats the best way of cleanin that part of the engine ? i wouldve guessed degreaser of some kind and washed with water but as its italian do i really want to get water that far into the bike ?
ive just got my first vtwin and i think i got the right one

Hi, just registered because I've got the same problem.  Mine appears to be coming from the right side engine gasket, the one behind the clutch cover. You obviously only get the leak when the ngine is running due to the dry sump. Mine is leaking from the left hand side of the gasket and making its way down and dripping onto the zorst.
I'm going to take the cover off and replace the gasket. Does this cover just come off when the bolts are removed? Do I have to take the clutch cover off first?
Any help appreciated. ( for those that say I should introduce myself first I will do that in the appropriate section Wink)

think you need to take the complete clutch basket out

Hi All,  Thanks for the replies. I've taken the clutch inner and outer covers off. Have to remove the thermostat and pipework, expansion tank and starter motor, no issues, easy job. Waiting for the new gasket. I had no oil trace any higher than the bottom left of the inner clutch cover. Have you tried nipping up the bolts on the case? The picture you've posted shows the cam chain tensioner, is it coming from there?
If there are no oil traces then it must be lower than you're looking imo. Is it leaking without the engine running? As it has a dry sump ther is very little oil in the lower cases when not running. It will leak more with the engine running as the oil is under pressure in the cases. Far short of pulling the engine apart and replacing all the gaskets i would start with nipping everything up and making sure its all correctly torqued.  Robin

I'm gunna have to take a good look at it and see if there's anything loose. I'd like to wash the engine down with some degreaser and see if I can find it but I'm a bit unsure about gettin water around all the engine leccys. It is Italian after all. I know it's only a small leak as it don't seem to be lookin oil and the oil on the pipes burns off quickly with not a lot of smoke.

I bought a steam cleaner off Amazon, great for cleaning engines and electrical connection without soaking the lot..

Its not a Ducati! Don't be too worried about the electrics. Spray them first with WD40 or the like. If the oil just burns off then it's not a huge problem, just a niggle. Let us know how you get on.
