Hello everyone, newby here.  Please don't flush my head down the bog.
 
Just bought a Falco on an 05 plate with 30k up, in that mushroom colour.  It's in mint condition and has GPR cans and an Ohlins rear shock.
 
I've just taken it on a  500-mile plus road trip from Oxon to N. Wales and back, and really loved it, but I have a problem with my forks that I hope someone here might be able to help with, or maybe point me in the right direction.  My bike has the later fitment Marzocchi forks, and I can't seem to find a manual on line that shows an exploded diagram.  The problems I have are as follows:
 
1: The preload adjusters are supposed to have 5 steps, however mine can just be turned round and round without reaching any stops.  It doesn't make any difference to the fork preload when you turn them.
 
2: The top of the rebound screw adjuster in the top of the right fork has snapped.
 
I am keen to take them apart and see what's what, but I want to know at least roughtly what they are going to look like inside first.  I suppose I can go over to On Yer Bike near Aylesbury (my nearest Aprilia dealer) and ask about the parts  if necessary, but it would be great to be able to browse an on line diagram.
 
Oh, and I also have an LSL billet top yoke woith billet risers and Renthal 'bars that I will be putting up for sale.  Pretty much as new, and the previous owner paid over £400 for them.  I don't need them as I've just re-fitted the standard top yoke and clip-ons.  I will stick up an ad in the classifieds section when I have a moment.
 
Finally, one other question.  How far do your (ideally Marzocchi) forks poke through the top yoke as standard?  Mine have a bit too much for my liking, and until I reduced the rear preload a little (thereby reducing the front attitude) it felt quite skittish.

Avoid OnYerBike, I've yet to hear anything good about them. Griff is only an hour and a bit away if you want anything doing, except when he comes down to me in Newbury, which is even closer to you :-) You won't get better service.

My pre-load adjusters aren't notched, they just turn, same as yours. They do work though. Three rings showing above the top yoke seems to be popular, what ever suits you best really. If it feels skittish, could be your damping is set too high or your tyres are over-inflated. 32psi front, 36 rear should be about right. When set up properly they are very stable bikes.

I will adjust the height of the forks in the yokes this weekend.  Also, I have managed to find a really useful workshop manual/guide for the Marzocchi forks. 
 
Having read it through, I think I feel confident enough to replace the broken rebound screw myself.  The manual also corroborates the post above, and my own findings,  that the preload adjusters aren't stepped after all, contrary to the Aprilia handbook.  It says the following:
 
In the 43mm model, the screw lets you preload the spring up to 15mm.To change the spring preload, always start from the minimum preload position (adjustment screw fully turned counter-clockwise) and take note of the number of turns considering that one turn corresponds to 1 mm of preload.

Well in case anyone's interested, I was able to order a new adjuster for the fork top, without having to order a whole cartridge or anything.  On these Marzocchis the fork top comes off as one piece and incorporates the preload & rebound adjusters.   
 
The new centre cost me just £17 from Forza Italia at Silverstone; I was up there for BSB last weekend, saw they were open, and popped in on the offchance.
 
If anyone wants the Marzocchi manual, send me a message or reply here and I will email you the PDF.
 
Having tweaked the front preload to one turn out from fully in, the front end is as good now on bumpy, twisty roads as I would ever want it to be.

I've tweaked my forks a bit nmore now, with another hqalf a turn of compression damping.  Had the front lift under hard acceleration over bumps while banked over on Saturday; not the slightest hint of a waggle when it landed. 
 
They'll be coming out for an oil change very soon, and I will fit the new centre I bought.  I will then raise the yokes by 2 rings to leave 3 rings showing, and see whether it stops me using all the fork travel.

do some research on what oil to use..... remember that aprilia, like those clutch rattling buggers from bologna, are convinced all their riders are narrow waisted flat arsed slim gits..... so you may want a slightly heavier oil....

By 'too much fork travel' Do you mean they're bottoming out? If so you need a tad more preload. Raising the yokes will quicken the steering, but won't have any effect on fork travel.

Also if you're having a lot of front lift going over bumps I'd say you need a bit more rebound damping on the front.

Hard to sort suspension over a forum, needs to be done in 'real life' really.

Yes, they're bottoming out even with the preload and compression both on max, and that's just under normal road riding.
 
To my mind that means they're out of adjustment and hence need heavier oil/springs.  I've removed them from the bike and am going to send them off to somewhere such as MCT once I've had a chat with them.
 
The reason the front lifts going over bumps is because it's a 1,000cc v-twin accelerating hard with the throttle wide open Big smile
