So, it was delivered today.
![]() ![]() So I took it out for a quick ride just to make sure it rode ok. It started straight away off the button from cold, good start. First reports are that it turns and feels a lot different to my last one (2009 R1) but it didnt take long before it felt solid and natural. A little harder to tip into corners but checking the rear tyre a little more closely and it would appear the last owner didn't like corners too much ![]() Brakes felt good, even the rear one works, so thats good. Suspension is pretty solid but I'm pretty light so a good setup will help I expect. Its bloody loud! Might need some baffles for track days but it'll have to do for now. All in all I'm very happy and am looking forward to getting a few miles under my belt and really gelling with the bike. Observations/Questions I could do with some help on: 1. I stink of exhaust. Is that normal? Or is it just that I've not ridden a bike for 6 months and have forgotten what its like? lol 2. The display reads 'SERVICE'. What does that mean? Can I reset it? (last service was at 15,000 miles and the odometer is now at 17,500) 3. Fork seals were weeping a little on delivery but I assume this is just from being tied down tight in the van (happened on my last 2 bikes too) so I've just wiped them down and will keep my eye on it. 4. Regarding battery problems/draining etc. Does everyone use optimates (etc.) all the time, or will it be ok left for a week or 2 at a time? Any comments/advice would be great. Cheers. Crownan

Sweet looking bike. Not sure I've seen on in that colour combo before.
3. Weeping seals sounds like busted seals to me, Ohlins one's don't have a long lifespan apparently. I had mine tied down in a van a month or 2 back for 200 miles, there was no weeping. 4. Use an optimate whenever you're not using it, they hate starting on anything but a tip top battery.

Keep n eye on those fork seals fella, the cans are a little shorter so will b loud, u can reset service think there's a post somewhere on here, was it serviced by an Aprilia agent/recommended as they need a axone machine to set up throttle bodies n the co2 levels might b running a bit Rich ?
Get or Set up the suspension ASAP fella then u will really start to gel with her Q what did u think of the R1 (cross plane model) ? |

Hi thanks, I'll keep an eye on the seals for sure, bike came with a 3 month/1000 mile warrenty so if they keep weeping I'll get them to sort it. Googled the last service place and its not an Aprilia dealer, it was 12 months ago too. I'm pretty tempted to chuck it at a proper Aprilia place for valve clearences and a good once over/setup too. I have a good mate that works for Steve Jordan's motorcycles who is a wiz with the suspension so I'll get him to do that. The R1 was an amazing bike, felt awesome, engine was a lot of fun and nicely different. It was loud as hell and really looked the part, immaculate actually, I spent a lot making it 'my own'. The only thing is its size, it doesn't feel too big but it looks massive and the bike is very wide. I only had it for 6 months then binned it into the front of a Peugeot and it got written off CAT D. I sold the wreck for a profit and got round to the Aprilia.

The ohlins do weep a little if she has been stood, couple of rides should see them sort themselves out, quite a few folk on here have experienced the same :)
If they do need replacing try and get them to put in the newer double lip seals, someone else will know more than me on this :)

I had one of those colours and I keep looking out for it to show up on here
The rear wheel looks too red to me for some reason.

Ohlins may weep if the bike has been laid up for a while. Generally it'll be OK if you pump the forks a bit and clean the chrome. If its still leaking, get it sorted by dealer. I have found that you can clean the seal face with very thin plastic...oil will come out, but I'll settle and stop leaking.
As people have stated, don't ever try to start on a weak battery, you'll cause hundreds of Quid's worth of damage by busting the sprag...not a certainty mind, but it'll get worse. Final point, and its a must, get the shocks dialed in for you, then you will love the bike even more. If you got money burning holes, put a power commander on it, get it dynod do the airbox mod and stick a 15 tooth front sprocket on it....then you'll know all other bikes are not worthy!!! |

Well I got out for about 40 mins yesterday just for a short blast as it was damp and freezing! Forks had weeped again when I got it out the garage so I wiped them down and they had weeped some more when I got back. Bummer.
I'll be ringing the dealer I got it off today as hopefully they'll come under the warrenty I got with the bike(?). Anyway, the ride felt good, the bike felt ace! Really pleased, just drops into corners, very, very planted. Requires slightly more bar input to change lean angle/line than the R1 but its marginal and I'm very happy

How many rings have you got showing above the top yoke? I found the bike to be a bit slow turning in on standard settings, dropping it a ring or 2 makes a massive difference. Worth having a look at.

Standard is 4 'notches' showing. Try dropping it a ring, really does change the way it turns
