I have a really horrible noise coming from what thought was the gearbox but now I think it's coming from the clutch case I haven't taken the cover of yet I put the bike on a paddock stand and I can go up and down through the gears. would I still be able to change gear with a broken clutch plate.

It’s a 30 minute job crack the clutch cover open to have a look at all the parts
(be careful you don’t break the diaphragm) It could be the pushrod bearing breaking up which is common or any number of things Strip the clutch out and check , also check the basket Video here of how to replace the bearing it’s easy

The diaphragm is probably stuck to the cover. Go around the inside of the cover, carefully pulling the diaphragm off, being careful not to tear it. There is also the vacuum pipe connected to the cover, but I left this connected when I removed my cover.
