I tried to get one of the stand bobbins out today and the hex has just rounded off. Any ideas how to get it out?
I could cut the head off the bobbin and bolt and brutalise it with a pair of grips, but that strikes me as unnecessarily medieval. |

Depending on how tight it is and how big the hex is you might be able to get it by smashing a star drive socket in to the rounded out hex head with a hammer. It makes a really good tight fit and you can get most rounded hex bolts out like this.
I got one of these hex/star drive sets amongst other tools and I just smash one of the star drives in to the rounded hex and use a socket wrench to get them out. I would try this method first before trying anything. You will be surprised how well it actually works. If its a hex nut head that you have rounded off get some impact sockets that grip on the sides of the flats or sockets that grip on the sides of the flats. You only need to buy the one you need and build up a few over the years. Thats what I did.

And if your not in too much of a rush keep soaking it as often as possible with penetrating fluid like plus gas or similar.

Ball pein hammer, a few sharp taps on the head of the bolt to slightly collapse the hex. Tap teh allen key into the now tight hole. A combination of percussive maintenance and the now tight fitting tool will give a better chance of getting it out.
