Got the new RSVR today. Nice example, really well looked after.
Took it for a 30 mile run on A roads and some twisty B roads. New tyres on so took it steady. Fitted with Dunlop Sportmax tyres. There's an issue though...it won't hold a straight line, especially at slow speeds. It wanders side to side and under braking. I stopped and checked steering damper, which was wound on too much, thinking that was the issue. Reducing it to one click in from fully out (my preferred setting on my other RSVs) helped a lot but it's still doing it and driving me nuts. Takes muscle and concentration to get it to stick to a line and under braking. I checked fork settings and they're set down with 4 notches showing, over the standard setting (I think) of three notches. Suspension feels really plush so haven't altered it. New sportsmax tyres I don't like much. Not huge feedback, flattish profile and I suspect they may be part of the problem. Any ideas?

Check headstock bearings, if they’re worn or over tight can cause this and tyre pressure.

I'd second looking at headstock bearings - if you take your hads off the bars when riding, does it run straight and true, or does it shake its head?

Is the steering damper an Ohlins?
If so, disconnect the ram eye end and see how easily it moves by hand, especially the force required to start movement. I had a problem with my Tuono which had an Ohlins damper fitted and started tram lining; traced it to the Ohlins being very stiff to start moving, which in turn is caused by the bushings drying out. If this is the cause the damper will need a service...that'll be £100+ please sir, which is why I sold it and refitted the original.

Yes, it's a factory standard Ohlins. I suspect the steering damper as the most likely culprit and was going to remove it as tbh, my last one had it adjusted all the way out anyway. The bike has been laid up for several years so I reckon it's dried out or got stiff and not been serviced in 20 years, but the bike has only covered 6K miles from new (MOTs back up the mileage). I'll remove it, take it for a ride and if all is ok, I'll simply leave it off. Only other thing it could be I think is steering head bearings but again, at 6k miles, unlikely.

I’m addition.
I’d also check the dog bone and rear bearings.
If they are tight or seized they will make it wander from lack of movement. Eyelets on the rear shock too. |

Answered my own question. Went to remove the steering damper and the main bolt holding it on had rusted in an seized solid. A bit of persuasion later and it sheered off part way up into the fairing bracket it's bolted into. The other bolt on the eye came off easily enough. Removed damper and it's as stiff as hell. Took the bike out for a spin and sheer bliss. No more tram-lining and can virtually steer with the knees on tank through the bends. Problem solved, damper now hanging in the garage. Not needed anyway unless suspension set up provokes front end shimmy. Suspension set up is perfect. Can hardly feel any bumps. It betters the ESA suspension of my old GSA.
Dog bone is fine. Free movement, no stiction or squeaking from rear linkages.
