As stated in my other thread, i have decided to get my 1999 Mille back on the road after about 12 years.
I have owned this since 2001. It has just dawned on me that when i last used it i am sure the clutch was slipping when giving it a fist full of throttle. I am going to take the clutch apart as i heard that you can 'rough up' the metal plates using wet and dry to get rid of the shine off them which helps with the slipping. These are wet clutches, so do i need to drain any oil prior to opening the cover? Anyone got any tips?

If it's on the side stand you won't loose any oil, most of it should be in the oil reservoir anyway.
Be careful when you take the cover off as the diaphragm will probably stick and check it when you get the cover off. I didn't bother disconnecting the vacuum line, just let the cover dangle. While youre in there check your clutch release bearing, it can fall apart with obvious consequences. I actually replaced mine on spec last time I had my cover off. Use the manual to rebuild your plates etc, from memory the last one is positioned differently to the rest and the clutch push rod is attached to the diaphragm.

How common is this Steve and at what mileage? I've not come across it as a weakness but will put it in the list as a precautionary replacement if required. |
