I've still got an old Gen1 exhaust sitting in the garage thinking it might be needed for an mot, but it never has.
Has anyone opened one up and tried modifying the baffles, length etc?

Yes, it's quite common with cans (of all makes) to shorten them for looks, or to cut out a bit with a dent etc. They have a restrictor in the link pipe, that is often removed, or cored as they say.
Question everything.

Yeah, the dustbin. Kind of thought exactly as you said, shorter with its guts ripped out.

Does that mean I like short, fat and loud. Oh dear

I've seen the standard can with rivets cored, but not the welded up one.
Youtube vid here, full de core then straight through perforated tube and packing.

The de core isn't pretty if you've an ounce of mechanical sympathy, but the finished cans actually look OK.
People say I don't know Jack Sh1t; but I do, he lives next door.
