5 door estate version, permanent 4wd with mechanical auto diff-lock. 99K miles, no rust except for around the sun roof frame (easily replaced for £100 from a breakers) but no leaks, in overall very good condition. Super interior, looks very fresh and clean.
Iconic lightweight, tough as old boots and ultra reliable 4wd. 2 litre petrol manual. House move forces regrettable sale. Mot's and has new front tyres and a new brake caliper, and is recently serviced. £3000 ![]() |

The better car all round is the Mk2 I reckon. More interior space and doesn't lose the off road ability unlike later models. Lightweight but built like a brick outhouse. 2001to 2005 petrols are the ones to get if you're after one, in 5 door. It's not that much longer than the 3 door and has a lot of extra load space, especially since the rear seats fold up or come out with the pull of a lever. I sold this one on the proviso that the gent who bought it offered me first refusal on it if he came to sell it later. If it wasn't raising cash for moving, we wouldn't be selling it.

We had a diesel one in the family until a few years ago. Would do 50mpg driven sensibly and when snow was on the ground it was the only vehicle in our street that could get out (Quite a steep hill) for over a week! The only issue with the diesels is the DMF as they tend to go every 80K or so |

Yes, DMF is an issue with them as are sensor issues in later higher miles ones and overall, major servicing costs are higher than petrols. The EGRs block and eventually the inlet manifolds gunk up and injectors can be affected especially if it's mainly short trips but that's diesels for you, any of them. The petrols are much simpler engines, bomb proof reliable, cheap and easy to service and still reasonably economical.
Of all the 4wd fashionable type SUVs, the Rav Mk1 and Mk2 with their unsophisitcated but tough as old boots, over engineered 4wd system and clever gearing (first is an extended crawler gear to avoid the need and cost of a low ratio box) combined with auto-difflock and relatively high suspension travel meant that they were far more off road capable than ever given credit for. I've taken mine where no modern SUV would go, and where you'd really only usually be happy in a Defender. Ground clearance is better than most but still the limiting factor. 15 inch ballon tyres shod with Yokohama Geolanders will take you most places except deep mud. They're really nippy on road too. As you say, great in the snow too, you rarely have to get worried about getting stuck! Imho, the recipe of really light weight, robust engineering and reliability combined with a really comfortable driving position and seats, and lots of useful space, make these one of the best all round cars I ever owned. Fun to drive. We also have a Lexus RX450h which ultimately is way more sophisticated and comfortable, faster and roomier, but not as much fun to drive and nowhere near as capable off road, but it's decent enough in snow covered roads.
