Oh here we go ! Read this thread and think it's a brill idea.
I have been thinking all sorts about my gen 2 and the engines i have ,and it's interesting to read  how to get the best motor from combining a 1 and 2 .
Now seriously thinking of getting rid of my ZRX1100 and spending the cash on doing the same .
So whats the best Gen 1 engine to start with?
Common sense says the last model year but don't know if that would be right or not,any comments please
knowledgeable ones out there.

Valve sizes through the years.....

.......... Inlet Exhaust

1998-99 36 31

2000 36 31

2001-02 38 31

2003 38 31

2004-05 38 31

2006 on 38 33

think early gen2 had 2 piece valves....friction welded so may be a weak point

That's one big bore motor built and residing home.
Great work and attention to detail with the modifications within head.

Now just to get it fitted and see what beast lays within

I've been having the same thoughts, only keeping gen1 bottom end with the better crank and just using the gen 2 top end.

Not many gen1's run their mains or big ends Wink

I'ill probably do the mechanics and run it as standard bore first though if I decide to go ahead

Ian...is it just the heads or the barrels and pistons too that you need off the gen2 to go on the gen1 bottom end?

I'm pretty sure the barrels and pistons are interchangeable,I just happened to acquire a some of each as they were available. I think if you fit the later rods you need to also fit the later spray bars though.

The strange thing is I know more than a few people who used to have gen1 Milles and upgraded to the gen2 and found didn't like the way they made their power as it was more top endy and seemed to lose out on low down grunt. Confused

It does seem to be the way to go with bigger bores though.

i'm now on my shut down from work after christmas which is by far the crazyist month of the yr for me

Now spending some quality time with my girlfriend & me son whos now just 3 weeks old

In the next few weeks i'm gonna get the engine swapped over.

I've ordered my chip from Gabro & have the daughterboard ready to fit

Picked up a set of Arrow Cans to Match the headers but i now have 4 sets of cans to start with
Cored Standards, Arrows, Quills & Promotive Titainuims........

Got a set of Gen2 Tb's now as better spray pattern for the big bore over the Gen CER 57's i Have fitted Currently..

Am switching to Gen2 Rad & Oil Coollers so i had to find a Bellypan..
Carbon Fibre Factory one Purchased
So one of my favorite parts from the gen1, the Full lenght bellypan will be tucked away no doubt

cant wait to get started & finished.....

Cheers Mark

I hope so...i know it'll be unique

I asked Gabro....
Gen2's have better attomization & flow rate with better throttle response but a little tricky to tune on idle.
The Best Choice

But can still use the Cer's

With doing all this i'll just mae sure that every detail and extra compliments everyone in one hit fella

Following this with great interest Cheesy. I am hoping to go BB next winter. Though mine will just be a plain old gen 1 BB with gen 2 (06 on) heads. If any one has any CER 57's they are selling, I'd be interested so I can run them before the BB. I have 54's at the mo and hope to be on the dyno in a couple of months for a custom map.
Question everything.

Hi Mixdrive, thanks for the offer. I was specifically looking for the Edwards with the green injectors to run this summer before the big bore next winter, because I can just chuck them on and set up on the dyno with the other mods and have a custom map...

However, thinking on... As Cheesy says the gen 2 ones have better spray pattern etc and I will want those TB's when big bored!

If I ran those on mine at the mo I need to get the adapter plugs etc for the injectors and blank off something and put on the idle stuff from my TB's, unless your already running them on gen 1?

Hmmm give us this evening to mull it over, I've spent so much on the bike these last 2 months- it's unreal!! I've just bought some 51's bored out to 54mm as well! Lol! LOL Can I say a provisional yes? And PM you later to definitely confirm? Big smile
Question everything.

They're not advertised for sale fella so no problem at all...These are straight off a gen2 so yes you would need to buy as far as i'm aware the connectors and 57mm velocity stacks and assuming file your gen1 airbox to suit.....I don't honestly know though mate about fitting....I bought these for my track project but then bought an already modded track bike.....I haven't had the tank off on that yet but from what he said he just cut the connectors off and hard wired them in along with gen1 pc3 usb which obviously also has different connectors as you'd need a gen2 pc3....Hope that helps mateWackolol

No worries if you do decide to go gen2 57 throttle bodies and can't find any cheaper just let me know fella Wink

Well done Cheesy, following this with great interest as I have a set of Arrow headers (to go with my cans) and a PC V to pass to Griff when I go 1060 on my Gen2.

Hopefully all the bits and cash will be in place for the end of the month to make an appointment with the Grifster LOL

Griff was also recommending the airbox replacement kit as the final icing on the cake, but I am concerned that this will breath messy oil fumes over the bike?

Can anyone confirm or deny my fears?

If they do I will pass I think but do love a bit of induction noise LOL

the evo seals to the undersice of the tank so it wouldnt cause any mist etc to go back over the engine

Well old engine is out of the Tuono.

New engine has had..
Flywheel, stator & outer case swapped over to Gen1.
New mag oil drain
New clutch jet
New oil filter & plugs
3way outlet & temp sensor swapped

Just gotta pull old clutch plates & springs for the new Ebc items

Then we're good to refit
