The cheapest way would be to ride others bikes with different gearing, or get different sprockets that match the chain length you have.

I wouldnt go less than 16 on front myself , chain will run tighter to swingarm guide and wear out quicker, 16/44 on mine and i cant fault it , i would replace with the same again .

Gen 1 was 17/42 standard I'm sure.

I was running 16/42 for a couple of years then went down to 15t on the front, unfortunately this coincided with going up to a 190/55 profile rear tyre though and it cancelled out any change to the gearing and actually went slightly longer.

Since then I've gone back to a 190/50 tyre but also gone up at the back to a 44t,I did a couple of trackdays like that and I'm now going to go back to a 15t front for the next one.

That should give me some advantage over the R1/blade hordes out of corners Big smile

I would think it might be slightly short gearing for the road though, ask Sabre as I think he might be running that gearing.

Well they're cheap enough @ around £20 a sprocket I think so you can't beat a choice.

I did think that 16 was the smallest recommended generally for bikes as the chain has a tight radius to bend round plus the s/arm protector comes in for more wear.

As the gen2 runs a 16t standard (I think ) and they fit a 15t and run no problem I can't see any reason not to use it on a Gen1.

Mine will only see minimal road use from now on anyway so if 15/44t gives more usable pull low down out of corners it will be ideal for smaller, twisty tracks.

I've run 15/44 on a Gen 1, no problems at all & fits the chain better than 16/44 which is super tight!
Always 2-up so needed the gearing lower to keep up with my solo riding buddies....no issues with the front lifting everywhere (and I was 2-up) but first gear was only for pulling away before short shifting into 2nd.
Hope this helps?

Unless you were one of the very few still running 17/42t standard gearing and not using the 16t front that Aprilia stuck under the seat with new bikes I doubt you'll notice any difference using that combo Smile

I've never ridden with a 17t front but I can imagine it would be a mile over geared Shocked

Amazing what manufacturers do to get through the noise etc regs.

I'm surprised there are still any Gen 1's around using the gearing they came fitted with,I was under the impression they supplied a 16t taped under the seat with every new bike and that was then fitted at the free 500mile service.

its only had two owners so maybe he liked it standard .so it should be a big surprise for me when i get them fitted may be tomoz .it is short first gear now compared to the R1 ,but from there on the power is good .just air box mod then chip from ed then to griffter to do his magic.was hoping to get all done for when he comes up north but it all comes down to the money

Have you got the modded collector? If not then you REALLY should do it!

That and the chip together really change the feel of the bike,to me it just seemed like a 200cc bigger engine with torque from tickover.
