Set the front rider sag to 25- 30mm before you fiddle too much. That sets the forks to work in the optimal part of the travel. If you have too little which i suspect you might if it's standard then you will be working in the last part of the fork travel where the damping level ramps up very sharply and will make it feel harsh. Another trap people fall into is to run too much compression in search of feel. The perception being that the more you feel the road beneath you the better you can judge the grip. While that is true to a point it's easy to dial out most of your movement and actually have less grip. Feel comes from a good setup and time on the machine. Get your sag right front and rear and set the suspension to something like standard settings and vary from there after you have some miles in the saddle. I would also weigh yourself in your riding gear as well as you will probably be in the 15 stone range like me which often benefits from a stiffer rear spring.
