Getting pretty fed up of this bike.

Went out yesterday and when I came to start it up again it did the same as before.  Clicking noise on the press of the starter button and would not fire up.  A guy had to push me to bump start it.

I had this a couple of months ago.. Changed the battery to a higher current one and fitted a new starter relay.  All has been okay upto yesterday.

The chap who helped me bump start it said the condensation in the clocks may have an effect on the starter system.  Could this be true?

I am now on the verge of part exchanging it.  Only had it since Nov 11.  New speed sensor, back brake problems, new fork base because the previous person overtightened the clamp bolts and new seals and oil on both forks £350. New battery, new starter relay, new plugs!!

Can't trust taking it out and not starting again.

Any advice please?

you need to check the charging circuit. you should have around 14.2-14.5 volts going into the battery at idle (dont use the dash to measure though its rather inaccurate).

Irrespective of model type you need to check the status of the connectors between the stator and the reg/rec unit.

If a Gen 1 bike then the reg/rec maybe at fault or a Gen 2 the stator could be at fault.

what he said..get in touch with killaprilla for uprated cables for the battery and starter...

go through all the connections..is the stator breaking down on its way out..a common problem..it will show up as problems like you are experiencing..workshop mnual shows how to test it

Not stripped the bike down yet, but it fires up occasionally from the starter button!  I had this problem a couple of months ago.  Changed the battery and starter relay, then it was okay. Where does the earth go to the frame please? Could it be that or the damp in the dash.

What model bike do you have Lee ?

The earth on the Gen1 goes to the rear cylinder head, rhs as sat on the bike.

Do you have a multimeter ?

Okay I am going to guess stator, buts lets start with basic's. (Also assuming the connectors are in tip top condition)

If you can start the bike measure the voltage across the battery terminals 14.2 - 14.5 is where you need to be.

If more than that the battery is being fried and if less than that its being drained, both have the same negative result.

Next check the stator output , first unplug the brown lead that goes into the reg/rec unit. With your multimeter set to ohms or resistance measure between pins 1-2, 1-3 & 2-3 readings should be around 3-4 ohms but no higher than 6 and not 0.

Next set multimeter to ac volts (not dc), make sure you have the meter securely connected to any 2 pins on the brown stator lead and start the bike, from idle to around 4000 rpm you want to see a good 60 volts ac, repeat for the other pin combinations.

The last thing is does it have an alarm or any other electrical accessories ?

It has a Datatool S4 Red.  I will try the above tests tomorrow.  Many thanks for you advice.  I hope it is not the stator. ££££.

Done the battery check, thats fine.

The stator cable I did the ohms test on the three yellow cables that go into the brown block.  Reading 0.005 !   The voltage test I did the reading was 60 v plus when the revs were above 4000rpm.  The bike would not start on the starter switch but did when I put a screw driver across the starter relay terminals.  All the block connectors are fine.

Anymore suggestions please?

Okay so you say you shorted the solenoid terminals and it started, its looking like you might have a solenoid issue (potentially)

Did you check what charge was going into the battery though ?

Okay so it might be just a sticky starter button (not unheard of) ?, squirt some wd40 or electrical contact cleaner in the button.

This bloody bike, I disconnected every connector then sprayed with GT85, now it fires up again.  All the connectors were dry, no sign of any corrosion.  Can't understand it!

Get under your skin dont they ?..., I've had Frankie for 4 years now but it seems 50 times longer than that !, He has caused me to lose friends and strain relationships with family, cost about 3k to keep running yet when I do a trackday or go for a swift Sunday morning thrash all that seems to become irrelevant.

So frustrating, I can't trust going out and it being reliable.  Time for it to go.  Love it for its sound and handling but its not good enough.  Only had it since November 11.

Ive spent £500 on it already for problems.

Ive had my eye on a couple of KTM RC8's.  Its got to be a V Twin again though.  Ive had the TL1000s, TL1000R the RSVR but I dont think I will get a Ducati due to servicing costs etc!

Thanks for all your comments.

All the best.

Depends which Ducati you get. My 848 has cheaper service costs than the Aprilia. If your talking pre 2007 i would agree with you.

Rc8 is nice but if you think they are trouble free then i would have a look around because they can be fickle too.

Low and behold, not working again.  sometimes it fires up on the starter button then others I need to use a screw driver across the starter relay to short it out!

The earth straps seem okay, I am going to run another cable from the battery negative to the frame, maybe that will help!

Lee, you really need to check out the starter button and if poss the solenoid, it could still be duff.

No blackening on any connectors.  Cleaner and dry.

Since spraying the contacts etc and putting and additional earth cable from the negative of the battery to the frame, it appears to be working and starting again!! Piece of sh*te!
