I started the bike up this afternoon as I always do after fitting the full Arrow system and noticed that the bike was warming up a lot quicker than usual before I knew it the bike went from 35c to 70 in about 3 minutes which is WAY quicker than normal.....
I also got a puff of blue smoke from under the tank somewhere and there is a strong smell of burning ???? Oh Dear lol I'am thinking there is something wrong with the coolant system but can't find anything out of the ordinary there... Had a look under the tank and there is nothing catching on any hot part of the engine... The new system has been installed and I triple checked everything there.... There is coolant in the water bottle and the rads are getting hot along with the engine... Erm, I'am a bit lost really, anybody else got any ideas lol ??? Cheers fellas NickyBoy

its a 2003 tuono and I don't know if the fans are cutting in, I got scared by all the smoke and switched it off lol
Haven't got the guts to take it right upto 96c to see if they do lol I'am gonna take the whole system back off again and put the standard headers back on and then check everything again... NickyBoy

Yeah there is oil in the engine, when I started the bike up there was oil in the sight glass and then it disappears from sight just like it always does, if that makes sense lol NickyBoy

Cheers fella, I had a look at the pipes and they were very close to the new exhaust... I've also had a look at the rocker cover gasket and it looks like its shagged.... I consulted the Master and he's pretty sure its the rocker cover gasket thats bit the dust... I am a bit worried about where the top of the engine bolts to the frame though, it looks likes its moved ??? Cheers to all you guys for the help ![]() NickyBoy

its reusable gasket got to make sure its dead clean, maybe picked up a piece of grit, when last removed ,smear oil over gasket use torque wrench to tighten in sequence.

I'll replace it with a new one anyway ![]() Why would the failed rocker cover gasket cause the engine to run very hot though ? ![]() NickyBoy

yup in the warm weather Frankie will be up to 72 celcius within minutes. The smoke could have been oil residue burning off, you would know if it was something electrical cooking that smell is unique !

New New cans, or used ones that might have been cleaned with something that would burn off? Either way I'd expect quite a bit of smoking first off as it all seals together. Would have thought you'd know, or does your fetish only extend to exhausts OFF the bike lol.

I had exactly the same smoke come out of my engine bay when I installes the akras back on when I rebuilt my bike, as soon as the pipes were moved et voila no more smoke!
maybe a sticky exhaust valve coulda caused it to run up too hot?! |

Pmsl, nah I'am ok when it comes to Zorsts mate, that's why I started panicking... I do have to come clean though lol lol, the reason why there was Soo much smoke is because I made a schoolboy error and left the rubber sleeve on the rear exhaust header spring which was touching the red hot zorst, so as soon as it got hot enough it burnt through it pmsl NickyBoy

NOTHING LOL I run the engine right up to 98c this afternoon and the fans cut in and started to cool it down as normal, phew lol No other nasty smells or noises... The reason why the engine is getting hotter quicker might be because of the high temperature we had the other day and the fact that I'am now running 10/40W oil now instead of 15/50W which is less viscous.... I'am still gonna replace the front rocker cover gasket though as the one that's on there at the moment looks shagged lol NickyBoy

Not sure you should be running thinner oil. Milleys have almost 500 cc pots with 70 horses pushing against the shells. You'll run the risk of forcing out the oil and having metal touch metal in the shells.
My pegaso is a 660 thumper too that has to run 15/50...I did run 10/40 in it last year, but this year it runs better and smoother with the 15/50. I would never run anything less than 15/50 in the milley, and its done 46K miles now....still going strong (see another post in general titled snetterton track day 7th June for a nice pic) 10/40 in for an extra pony or 2 just isn't worth it. Ditto. 15/50 is designed for hotter climates than ours 10/40 flows better at low temps. Looking at the spec of the oil I use they both have the same shear strength so it shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah fans are cutting in ok, I think it was just me panicking after I fitted the new system lol Took the bike out for a ride and the temperature was holding at 78-79c - Sorted ![]() Lighter oil might also be why the bike's warming up quicker too, 10/40W instead of 15/50W. NickyBoy
