Hi Folks,

it's been a while as I deserted the RSV community when I bought a KTM, then (mea culpa...please forgive me this) a Harley 1200 sportster which didn't stay long, then 3 years back a newish GSA1200.

As good, reliable, grunty and comfortable as the GSA is, it's just too good if that makes sense?  It handles like a sportsbike, stops better than my old RSV and has a huge amount of shove thanks to 92ft-lbs of grunt and it does that with all day comfort.  But....it's not an RSV.  I have been having guilty pangs about selling my Eddy Rep a few years back so have decided to jump back onto an RSV.  They're not as reliable as the BMW's, not as comfortable, not as smooth and (to my disbelief) don't quite handle with the rock solid predictable stability of the GSA. They're more agricultural, louder (Smile) and like our little cocker spaniel, have moments you just want to thrash the damn things...for all that I LOVE the RSV like no other bike ridden in 35 years.

My new ride is under discussion and I'm trying to do a deal on it presently.  A 2001 RSVR which was resprayed from new to the owner's preference, 6K miles (warranted), tidy but not immaculate.  Nice arrow end can, fresh service and new boots.

Please tell me I'm doing the right thing!LOL

I've just spoken with Griff and he's of the same opinion....except for my bad back and age....my eyes have written cheques that my body may not be able to cash, but that's what painkillers and back braces are for LoL!

Regarding the Harley, the later ones were much better.  Mine dyno'd at 77BHP and 85ft-lbs at the back wheel with SE intake kit and straight through slash cut pipes plus SE engine management tuner.  It would rip the arms from the sockets as it made that torque from just under 3000 rpm.  It was genuinely quick to a ton...just weighed as much as a small moon so didn't like going round corners!  Not enough suspension travel either, even with after market shocks.

I've decided to pull the trigger on the RSVR

don't see how to post a picture.  When I work that one out, I'll put one up.

From new it was professionally re-sprayed a flat silver and the frame painted black, then the paintwork properly lacquered once decals had been replaced.  That would detract from a resale but I don;t mind it as it stands out a bit from the crowd.  Would have preferred a black/Red rsvr or a yellow one though.

I reckon it's been laid up in a garage for a few years.  Mileage hasn't budget much between mots.  Should have it in about 2 to 3 weeks.  Already looking for local chiropractors!

And rearsets that lower the pegs, which I'll be doing soon.

As an aside, I've been toying with the idea of a 1200GS as a commuter for my Berkshire to London ride - how would you rate it for that sort of thing?

I would say it's the best bike bar none for that commute.  You can still have fun en route, as trust me, there's plenty of performance.  To 60, they're quicker than an RSV!  Handling is great.  Don't be put off by the huge GSA...it's worth it for the extra comfort and weather portection over the GS and thanks to huge torque, it loses out hardly any on performance.  Just fit it with the MRA X flow screen.

Staying sensible and riding around Snowdonia and back on mine last longish trip out, I got around 60mpg out of it but still had fun in places where safe to open it up.  That was with full luggage on!

Heated grips, great visibility due to height and HUGE road presence make it the ideal commuting tool.  It's what most are used for and not doing the Arctic Circle or long way down as many poseurs would have you believe.

They are good for weekend scratching on B roads too and a big plus under heavy braking is no front end dive thanks to telelever suspension.

Try one out first.  Dealerships are always happy to allow test rides.

Be aware that the seat height on the GSA is over 900mm!  I'm only 5'8" though, old and knackered and I manage fine.

Good call and thank you.  It's growing on me but I prefer standard colours tbh.  Easy enough to find a complete good used body panel and tank set for under a grand these days though.  I'll probably leave as is though as the paint job is superbly done.

Reminds me of the early rs250’s, I had a Ducati multistrada 1200s for a few years and that was a fantastic bike, you could embarrass most superbikes in comfort and carry your sandwiches, if it gets the heart racing just do it👍

Yep, I rode a 1260 Enduro Multistrada at Ducati's invite when they did their superbike tour a few years back.  Impressed with upper mid and top end shove and handling, but I found it ridiculously tall (taller than my GSA Shocked) and it had very little grunt under 4K revs making it easy to stall around town.

On the move it was very deceptively quick and smooth and quite comfy.  Quicker than the GS on full throttle but the GS had way more low end shove which personally I prefer.

The Gen1 remains my favourite all time bike (especially the SP, closely followed by the Edwards rep and any of the rsvrs).  I have a soft spot for the standard big valve RSV as it was my first one and the 2001-2003 bikes are definitely worth it over earlier models, but hey, they're all good Thumbs Up

The only gen1 I haven't owned is the SP but unlike Chris of 44 Teeth fame, most of us mere mortals will be lucky to find one and even if we do, you're talking £20K to £40K depending on history.  I turned one down 10 years ago at £8K (kick myself every time I remember back to that!).

Who wouldn't love an SP but very few could then risk riding it regularly due to the inevitable value depreciation and unobtanium engine components if needed. And to me, if you don't ride it, then what's the point?

If I had one, I'd ride it LOL

I don't worry about engine parts as with people like Alan Millyard around, there's always someone who can make up specialist bits.

The investment doesn't worry me.  We pay a fortune for our houses but continue to use them and I reckon whilst top prices will always be with low mile examples, they'll all appreciate in value even if ridden as long as they're well looked after and have a comprehensive history. I'd never track one though as I would with an RSV.Beer

I would track one, there’s loads of people still using rc30/45’s, owo1’s etc, the guy I bought my blade off has just bought 2 fp1’s and tracked one of them with zero miles on it, they’re to be used. I have a zero miles sb8k coming from the USA and numerous people have told me not to use it because it’ll ruin the value but screw that it’s getting used.

Yes, we were up near Silverstone a week or so ago.  Two hour drive.  Castle Combe is perfect venue-wise and is a fast track too....just a shame only sewing machines are permitted these days due to complaints form retired chocolate box house owners nearby (who always knew they were buying next to a race track).  Reminds me of some blow-ins close to here complaining about the "smells" coming from adjacent farms and about farm traffic on local roads!  I'd rather see a tractor than the groups of lycra wearing bicyclists who infest local roads here in summer/autumn. They have become a real danger here both to themselves and other road users.

did you do a trackway up at Silverstone ?

i get exactly what your saying, i think the same about people who bought a house next to Silverstone then complain it gets loud, prats.
funny you talk about the lycra boys, i recently found out that pushbikes cause a lot of grief, i mean they don't pay tax or insurance cant say i have ever been a fan myself.

I wasn't track daying unfortunately.  I have had more angry encounters with dangerous prats in lycra than I care to remember so am now blanket prejudiced the whole flipping lot of them.  Single riders out for exercise or commuting are no bother at all, it's the groups of privileged club riders which cause the trouble.  Never ride in split groups making it impossible to overtake on some roads and passing a large group a while back I sounded the horn to let them know I was passing only to have one deliberately pull out and try and block me whilst I was doing 50mph past them in a wide berth.  He strayed onto the opposite carriageway to block me and almost got wiped out as a result, the utter cnut!  Would have served him right had he been hit.  Got it all on dash cam and should have gone to the police but they're so ineffective they'd have done nothing so didn't bother.  Just gave him an almighty verbal bollocking and left it at that.

If they did it to me whilst in the van I’d pull in front and hit the brakes, but officers a dog ran in the road and you wouldn’t want me to kill a dog would you. I go out on my motorcycle at sunrise to enjoy empty roads, why when on a pushbike wouldn’t you do the same, empty roads and clean air, your not holding anyone up or breathing crap in.
