Anybody has any idea of the real life performance (on the wheel) of an unmodified gen I? After the airbox work, mod collector, PC3, EPROM, Mivv can+link pipe we messured a "lofty" 110hp... True to be told, didn't expect a firework and if anything I'm after a hefty midrange grunt, but still... Though the can with the buffer in sounds like a bloody scooter (Griff says we lose around 8hp there), but I need something road legal with stamp and/or certificate as the blue maniacs on wheels issue heavy fines or confiscate the bike on the Continent. Any ideas?

My Gen1 made 112 with an eeprom, filter and Leo Vinci can. It was measured with only 1k miles on it at the time so we put it down to still being a bit tight but early Gen1's (it was a 2000) did have quite restrictive airbox/intakes so weren't the best in terms of max hp numbers.
 
Was that measured with the baffles in ?

Mine measure 115 with an Aprilia Ti and the restrictions, er, unrestricted but no other mods.

Yep, messured with them damned baffles in situ. Looked and saw that they are super restricted (narrow, bent tube, facing the inside wall of the can). My idea is to take it out cut off the bent narrow piece, put it back and hey presto, the can's road legal again!

But can I get away without Dynoing the bike again? Money's an issue as you can see.

Can you get away with it, yes I doubt it will run badly at all it just might not be as optimal as it could be.
 
When we did the big bore on Garin's Tuono we did the first dyno run with the baffles in by mistake, It took about 10bhp off as a rough guide.

i have had a edwards rep for 7 years now its running the twin akra system among the paper work is a dyno sheet from the carbon can comp if i remember right this is from some time ago but reads 128 .5 bhp

Some real life numbers
Gen 1 with std silencer (front perf tube removed), Redratbike modded link pipe, big air boot, edwards intake tubes, standard gearing, 74Kg rider
Standing start mile - 167.3MPH
Standing start 1/4 mile 11.1 sec @ 127MPH

I had a 2006 SP-2 that with akrapovic exhausts and PC3 with bespoke map gave 125bhp at the wheel. I haven't had the 2003 RSV I got as a second bike last year on a Dyno but can feel that it's plenty less than the SP-2.

I know Griff and others may not agree with me but I found that the cam timing on the Gen 1 is at best agricultural and at worst wildly inaccurate.

You can also can a little bit of cheap power by installing 2005 (maybe later, cant remember) exhaust cams all round and then time them properly. You can get some good gains by just timing the standard cams properly , just dont go wild 106/107 is ideal you might push 108/109 but I lifted a cam carrier out of the head with this "setting"

The other thing is that the cam lobes are only pressed onto the cam shaft and can "walk" at high rpm down changes.

Some (jap particularly ) want to sell you a new bike every few years, a massaged power figure to pretend that new is better !

It's how a bike rides, how it steers, the confidence to be a 'riding god'! That's what makes the aprilia better than the other offerings. The rsv won most of the track comparisons (quicker time and confedence)

I like the way cycle world give their old reports to the world. Most magazines will prosecute if you publish their old reports on the net !

Adjustable cam wheels would seem to me to be the first thing to do in an engine rather than a B/B  but what do I know.

I have a cam set complete bought for the gears alone and 2 of the shafts have spun their lobes. Absolutely crap engine design and execution Angry

It's mass production for u, and certainly not unique to any one marque. Ducati fit sh*t bearings in their motors year on year and get away with it but they do slot their cam sprockets as standard and it's part of major service shedules to check the timing

Think Gen2 cams are not pressed hence why Scott mentioned them as an option.
