Hi all,

Does anyone know/recommend an aluminium welder in the Peterborough / Cambridgeshire area?

I have just bought a 2012 cat C  BMW F800 for commuting and for my wife to ride as she fancies getting back in the saddle.

The bike is all straight with gravel rash on the left but the alumium footrest hanger has sheared off.  From the pics it didn't look a big deal until I picked it up and realised it bolted to the engine and the cast lugs were sheared.

I think I can fabricate a couple of lugs and use the remaining threads to hold them in place but need someone to then weld the lugs to the casing.

Does anyone know some ideally close by or mobile or failing that I can trailer the bike somewhere.

Any thoughts / advice greatly appreciated.

I'd look for a motocross/dirtbike shop they will know someone who can weld an engine case

Fugly,it maybe a last ditch thing for you to do but i have tried this on a clutch case and it worked.It's still oiltight today.

Just a kind of alternative solution should you get no joy and someone on here repaired the swinging arm on an RS250 they race.

Hi Shyted,

Thanks for that, it looks really interesting so have ordered some and going to try on an old alternator that I am going to brake the flange of and try to build a new one.

If it works I reckon I can do it without dropping the engine which would be a good start.

One of our guys in purchasing put me in touch wit ha supplier round the corner who does our aluminium welding and they said they would take a look at it but would still need to drop the motor for that.

Will get the rest of the bike stripped on the weekend and have a look to see if I can have a go in situ.

I've seen that vid before it looks good stuff. Any idea where to get in i  the UK?

I ordered it off Amazon, 10 sticks of rod for £25 plus post

Will let you know how I get on with it

I watched someone doing live demo's of that system or something similar at one of the bike shows years ago

They made it look dead easy and the new material was stronger than the original,plus it can be drilled,tapped and all sorts afterwards

Mind you a good welder like a plasterer makes the impossible look easy anyway

Amazing in that video Ian he fills a hole with the stuff, inserts a bolt whilst molten then when it sets just unscrews the bolt and has a new thread! I think tapping it would be a better solution (But maybe not) although more work. You could do that with one of the plastic metal products as well though.

The more clean it is the better it works.I did it first time.
was on my GasGas trials bike and i did a day long practice at Back Cowm Quarry in Whitworth where it's all rock and where i damagad it in the first place.
Keep us posted Fugly and a picture too . I'm interested (as are others) in stuff like this.
