I have a 98 Mille, and as much as I love her and the way she handles it feels like she's holding me back due to limitations of the stock suspension. Now I know there's the option of spending crap loads of cash and doing the Ohlins upgrade, did that with my R6 and R1 in the States and loved it, but whats the other options. I've been looking at a set of revalved Honda SP-2 forks and wondered about those, what about revalve and springs in stock setup. What about the rear shock? What have you guys done, what can be done. Does anyone know of better forks that are direct bolt on, or compatable with yokes? Cheers

What exactly do you find to be "lacking" with regards the suspension m8? The only thing I've done on my 2000.5 RSV is dropped the forks slightly through the yokes and I can honestly say that its the best handling bike I've sat my fat arse on in years. Mate has an RR3 Blade and even he reckons my Mille handles better than his Honda belly-button.[:D]

Hi, I agree with Ecosse, never had a problem with the handling on my Mille and I haven’t got any chicken strips. Recently pushed it hard into midrange and long high speed bends 130 ish never gave me any concerns. I would go as far as to say the harder I’ve pushed it the better it feels. Wonder if it’s a tyre issue!!! Ecosse how much did you let the forks through and what benefits are gained?

well weighing in at 17 stone I've found the front end to be a little sloppy, I've set it up as best I can, but I still find it to be a little soft and unresponsive, bike has got 27000 on her and to my knowledge apart from new fork seals it's had nothing done to the suspension. Personally I was thinking of a revalve and heavier 1.0 springs upfront and then a rebuild and hyperpro to my weight spring in the back.... Or setting the HRC Showa's off the SP-2 onto the bike, I just love the way they feel with me on it, alot of people say the SP-2 forks are too stiff I love them.... just idea's.....

I think, if my memory serves me, I've got 6 lines showing at the top? It certainly sharpened the steering up a lot, but whether it actually handles any better is debatable. Dont normally fiddle around with my bike's suspension set up, almost all bikes I've had, I've ran at stock settings ( apart from a memorable time I had when i owned a GSXR750L, and arsed up everything because of my idiotic fiddling with the rear shock, oh.....and then there was the ZXR750J1 that bounced me out of the seat every 100 yards, until I got around to fitting one of those NWS linkages that everyone raved about at the time!! ).

When was the fork oil last changed ? It should be changed every 2 years at least. There has been no mention of any oil change, perhaps that is the place to start ? The oil degrades over time causing the front to feel spongy. I don't think any extra weight should cause a problem on standard settings.

I certainly wouldn't go down the route of trying to fit a set of SP2 forks to your Mille. After 28000 miles i suspect your forks need a proper service and setting up properly to your weight with new springs. The rear shock may well also benefit from a service. You'll be amazed at the difference in handling a properly set up bike will make. Try any one of these people M H Racing in Corsham, Wiltshire. 01225 811201 KAIS Suspension in Atherton, Lancashire. 01942 896366 K-Tech Suspension in Coalville, Leicestershire. 01530 810625 Maxton Engineering in Frodsham, Cheshire 01928 740531
