Evening all. Got a problem with my Tuono overheating and hoping somebody might know the reason. Bike has started to go to 110 degrees plus very quickly when warming up and in standing traffic but fine when on the move (80 degrees) Checked the coolant level and nothing in the header tank and couldn’t see fluid in the top of the radiator. No obvious leaks and oil no sign of water (fortunately) Performed a coolant change but temperature still shooting up quickly and radiator is cold. Not sure if there is a water pump (?) Fans appear to be working fine so suspecting a possible air lock ? Not sure either if there is a fuse in any part of the cooling electrical circuit. Service manual doesn’t have a great deal of detail on this at all. Interestingly topping up the radiator after running it the fluid just seems to fill the header tank - not sure if that is normal either !
Thanks Alan

You're losing coolant somewhere though. So either a small leak or potential issue with a head gasket if its pressurising the water up into the expansion tank. Need to check for air locks or indeed if it is a pump issue. There are fuses for fans but as you say they are working. I'd recommend giving Griff a call in the morning and go through the symptoms

If the rad stays cold even when plenty of water then there is no water circulation. I doubt the pump would fail but the drive gear is plastic so that might break. Or the thermostat has stuck closed.

Thanks to both of you for that. I’m going to get out in the garage tomorrow night and go for a full inspection of the whole system. Fingers crossed it’s something simple but if not Griff and crew will be getting a call !
Much appreciated Alan

Check your plugs, mine had the same issues with over heating which then within days it started to run like a dog, turned out to be a damaged spark plug on the rear cylinder..I went through the same checks as you, had convinced myself there was a leak....

Cheers A82, didn’t get out to the garage this evening but I’m going to take the opportunity now the weather’s gone bad to get a full service in. Plugs replaced together with all the Aprilia crimp clips that I’m reading may be part of my issue.

A lot of what has been said would explain leaks or overheating but if the rads are cold as the bike is overheating then there is no hot water reaching the rads.
That is where I would target an investigation first.

Thanks Spoonz, logic to me says either air lock, pump not working or thermostat issue. Will keep all posted.

Hi all, just a quick update and hopefully good news. After reading round the subject realised a) doing any coolant system checks bike is best on side stand ( was using paddock stand) b) there is a drain plug on radiator bottom left. Undoing the drain screw gave me 20ml at best so therefore logic radiator = empty. Managed to squeeze about 400ml into system by slow careful topping up and ran bike with radiator cap off. I could clearly see fluid pumping into the filler cap neck area so again logic says pump is working fine. At exactly 80 degrees right hand pipe feeding radiator got hot and so then did the radiator (Huzzah!) Temperature then remained steady around 80 degrees. I squeezed another 100ml or so in after leaving it to cool. Not sure why I had the fluid so low in the first place and will be checking oil tomorrow just in case it went in there. So, all good for now but if anybody has the correct way to top up and bleed the cooling system or tricks and tips I’d be grateful.
Thanks again to one and all for the helpful advice. Al

Ha, I had visions of the angry guy in the old Kenny Everett show that wore a pin stripe suit and had bowler and brolly, but with the back cut away to show stockings and sussy belt Suppose that was a bit before most of you watched tv and well before the pc brigade took over |

Sid Snot here! - I read in the newspaper
on Friday that the Kenny Everett Television Show was being
re-released. I said 'I don't believe it' (Sorry that was a different
show!), there's no way they would put that on air now. Further reading
revealed that yes, it is being re-released but on DVD. Typical BBC
hypocrisy they won't put it on air but are happy to rake in the cash
from DVD sales just as they did with Top Gear after sacking Clarkson.
Even my parents, both in their 80's immediately berated the modern PC
society when we discussed it. One of the funniest shows ever on BBC and the naughty bits weren't bad either: |

The click clamps are a bit crap.
For what it costs, swap them out for a 8mm stainless jubilee type. You won't always notice a leaky hose joint, especially when hot. The clips on the stat housing are hidden away, so probs worth sorting them. Tina.

I'd say air lock for sure, my race bike has no side stand so i have to lean it on the fence to fill with water then its a trip over to the lawn to lay it fully over on the near side to remove the air-lock

Thanks again for the advice - I can just imagine the crunch/pain/embarrassment/YouTube video of having to lean it over that far ! Clips deffo for changing as they’re cheap as chips. Just fitted forged OZ wheels and got a sparkly new Nitron shock to go in as well. I spoil her, I really do.
Cheers A

The other thing you could check is to see if the radiator is clean or if the fins are blocked with crap from muddy/winter riding.
