Another update.
 
I now have my full bearing parts for the swingarm and doglink from Fowlers.
Great service in fairness but probably not as nice as the lads in AP.... Smile
 
For those interested, the following is the invoice showing the quantities and prices for what I got and I also bought two spindle nuts as mine were shagged:
 
 
Next is a pic of all the little bits and bobs that I have got:
 
 
 
So the headers are going to be cleaned down and wrapped in Black heat wrap.
Seems like good stuff and plenty there so hopefully it will look as nice as I'm hoping.
 
I have just got off the phone with The Image Works and they have taken my order for the full decal set. This is the pic from their site as to what the colour scheme is like:
 

Just to make the bike a little Irish, Graham from The Image Works is going to change the small silver strips at the mirror are on both sides to the Irish Tri-Colour.......Its only a small touch but I'd say it will turn out nice.

When I did the linkage in my Gen2, I just bought it all 'ready assembled' from Apriliaparts UK.

The ready assembled item has a part number, all the separate components have their own numbers too.
It was, from memory, only something like £117 complete.
No buggering around with removal of old bearings etc.
Just slotted straight in.
Got a few quid selling the old linkage complete on ebay too.

I'd say that would be handy.
I replaced the engine in this bike mid June and had a look at the dogbone.
It was ok but dry as a "bone" but from seeing it, I know that changing the bearings should not be that bad.
I enjoy mucking around with the smaller things and will have a little bit of satisfaction out of doing the whole lot myself.
Keep in mind that I also got all the bearings, seals, Orings, circlip etc for the swingarm too for that price so not bad value.
 
I found a crown on Ebay that did the 6 oil seals for £15 for the dogbone also. I thought that was good value too.

The flywheel on the early gen2 was TOO powerful, the replacement is of lower power output.

Or at least the flywheel magnets are less powerful, goes from I think 550 down to 370 w ?

The uprated leads are probably the first thing you should mod on an Aprilia.


Depending on how bad the stand is,then it's a toss up between the two,but they both NEED changing asap.

Another question and looking for feedback and recommendations.

Im looking at a new chain and sprocket kit.
I like the Renthal kit so what I want to know is, what tooth count do I go for?
 
I dont commute so this bike is only for good weather and spirited riding so as long as it is functional gearing and nothing crazy, It should suit.

Is 16/44 the standard or what do people think?

Howdy Jond58,

I have another question on your Powder coated swingarm if that's ok?

Did you powder coat the entire arm including the area that the adjusters slide up and down?

I'm asking because I've arranged the work but i'm thinking that the movement of the adjusters would scrape and ruin the powder coated area over time.

I'm also thinking that it might be a good idea to ask them to mask off just this flat surface and powder coat the rest. 

I'm not sure though, so knowing how you did yours would be greatly appreciated.

I've powder coated where the sliders go but the areas where the brake caliper mount stuff needs masking out and also the areas where the bearings are. Don't worry if they don't do it just make sure they don't powder coat the recess for the bearings. You can clean the flat surfaces back carefully with a drill wheel or similar

Oh, i get ya.

might get the flat area masked off then.
if the arm is titanium and there are a couple of silver areas like the caliper bracket rail and the flat adjuster part might actually look nice in contrast.

Yeah I did my caliper bracket also in the titanium colour but the sliders I've left alone and they do stand out nicely against it.

Different strokes for different folks on gearing

Personally I run 15/44 on my gen1,I've been 16/42 and 15/42 and I much prefer 15/44 although it is a little short for some fast circuits when I venture out on track,although it just makes you carry more speed in a higher gear through some corners.

For road use I find it perfect on my 2003 gen 1.

My '09 Tuono is now running 15/42 which is quite nice,although I may go 44R on that as well this summer.

And yes,the standard side stand is a disaster waiting to happen,if it hasn't fallen over yet it will do sometime in the future if it hasn't been changed.

This was the first mod I did to both my bikes

So more parts arrived in....
 
Magnecor leads and after careful consideration, I went for All Balls wheel bearings and seals.
Based on cost and quality and reviews online, they seem to be well recommended.
I took a gamble on the Megnecor as I could not find many decent reviews online but looking at the quality of them and the finished product, they seem like they are pretty good. They are the 7mm product.

Question about the fuel tank if anyone could help please.
 
I have a niggly issue in the fuel tank that I need to fix while I'm doing everything else.

The drain pipe from the fuel cap that takes water from rain or fuel overspill down a pipe to the underside of the tank is blocked.
I think that this is the corroded junction and the base of the tank and looking at some forum posts, people have drilled these out.
Is that correct? Is it easy and can anyone share their experiences on doing this job?
 
Secondly, I want to replace the fuel filter.
I understand that this involves removing the unit from the tank.
Is this handy enough? If replacing the gasket on the base of the tank, does it seal again properly or are their any known issues with doing this job?

The tank drain is easy enough but use a drill bit by hand, just gently turn it by hand and I also used a piece of welding wire to feed down from the top .the fuel filter is ok to do but it's a bit of a gamble on the tank rescaling, depending on if its plastic or steel and the fuel hoses are held on by otiker clips I think they are called.

At Last, my full Decal kit has arrived from The Image Works.
The Tri Colour looks good on the top of the nose fairing too

Plastic or metal tank???

The plastic ones can distort on the flat where the pump mounts. Hylomar red can act as a safe sealant to get it to seal down. The bolts need torquing in sequence (like a head bolt) so that it pulls the pump down flat and even. Oh and there are two fuel filter types on the gen1 I've found!! Also you want some aluminium crush washers for the fuel lines!!

so the Motorcycle and scooter show was on in the RDS arena in Dublin today.
I managed to find a quality set of blind bearing pullers for €40.
Not bad considering its going to make my life a lot easier that trying other various ways of removing bearings.

180 or 190 width?

Im thinking 190 but as this is the first set of tyres im putting on this lady, i have no prior experience of how a Mille behaves on various sizes.
