I've just found out about the collector mod for my Gen1 Tuono and would like some feedback on any Pros and Cons. What kind of gains am i going to achieve and what other work needs done alongside the collector? I currently have a Quill slip on (which seems crazy long as it comes level with the reg plate) and would really like to change this also for a more modern look. Is there a Slip on pipe that works well with this mod?
I will more than likely send the bike down to AP to get all the work done but would just like some general feedback before I book it in.Clap

Collector mod works very well and basically makes the bike think it has a twin system on, I wouldn’t worry about the length of the can as these bikes do like a long system, go to short and it puts a hole in the midrange, I run a hexagonal akra that’s about 400mm long and I wouldn’t go shorter than that personally.

Bit hard to see the overall length on this can but they do suit the bike well.

No downsides to the collector mod,it's all plus and as said these engines do seem to prefer a longish can

Very true.
I was a bugger for a short g.p can on my milles.
The sound was out of this world, specialy with a mivv gp can.
But the best my bike ran was with the akra or better still
The aprilia racing can,louder version.
Looked, sounded and ran superbly with that on.
Wish id never sold it,if one comes up,grab it mate!

I've heard that twin systems are a bit quieter than the single system. I assume this is due to having 2 silencers so double the noise reduction. But does the collector mod alone do anything to reduce noise? Just wondering as the main power improvement seems to also be in the noise testing rev range.

I have a modded collector fitted with a (long) Giannelli 'silencer'.
The modded collector goes hand in hand with the FR200 chip; I've no idea how our bikes run with just the modded collector, but you'd be missing out on a heap of performance without the chip.
I like the long cans over shorter versions and those stubby POS are horrible.

People say I don't know Jack Sh1t; but I do, he lives next door.

Testing is usually at 2/3rds max revs isn't it? Although they aren't always looking at the rev counter  Wink

The other issue regarding twin cans on a race bike of course is the extra weight. Why add an additional can and pipework unless you get a significant improvement in power. Potentially more crash damage too if it does more than lowside.

Yeah completely agree Ray. Single system with collector mod makes a lot of sense as it's more practical (cheaper, lighter, crashes better) yet basically the same performance.

Was just interested in how things work out noise-wise before/after changing collector. Yeah static testing typically at 5k rpm, though I have been asked to do 7k before.

Thanks for all the feedback I will ring Griff for a quote to do collector mod. Am I going to feel any difference in power or is it minimal?

Short answer made long but as with most production bikes your really just undoing small compromises made by the manufacturer ( noise, emissions. Economy etc ) who has already got the best out of the bike in general.  Hence don’t expect arm wrenching changes but it does make the bike a little bit peppier in the mid range. Go into it with a sensible expectation and you will be pleased. It’s one of the few mods that I would genuinely spend my money on out of the common items people fit to rsv’s.

The modded collector actually quietens the exhaust

The gain is approx 10 bhp in the midrange

As Hemi said do not go shorter than 400mm

Let me know If going to Griffs as I would have to get a collector down as I supply Griff

That's good to know. Only chance I get to run my exhaust unbaffled is in Spain and more than anything else I just notice there's less engine braking.  And the baffled race can has less engine braking than the stock one. Positive in my book if the modded collector reduces engine braking.

Had a trip down to see Griff yesterday to get the collector mod done. 7hr round trip but to be honest it seems worth it. I only took the bike for  quick  blast tonight but it seems smoother at low revs, more responsive at 4k revs and also seems to have less engine braking. Heading off to Oulton park on Monday for the BSB so will be able to see what it's really like on a long ride.
Thanks to Mark for suppling the collector and to Griff /Amber for putting it all together 👍👍
