As some of you guys know I already make carbon fuel tanks.I have been asked a number of times about gen 1 and gen 2 tanks. Well I now have a gen 2 tank available to me to make a mould. So now looking for definite interest and I am taking names only at the moment. I need 10 to make it viable and based on the Falco tank size they would be £950.00 plus postage each. That price will not go down if I get more names or go up if there is more work than I hoped for. So let me know if anyone is interested.

OK sorry guys not been on recently... I have possibly an option on a Gen 2 tank to copy that is a good one and would be a start. It would be about 4 months before I get a mould made if this happens. Partly due to work I have lined up now.

So as this tank is a good one and I have possibly got a deal with the mould maker. I will take names only for this Gen 2 tank. I need to get names together to be sure I can cover the cost of the moulds and materials.

Price will be £950.00 plus shipping.

THIS IS FOR NAMES ONLY, NOT DEPOSITS OR PAYMENT UP FRONT.

Hi Morepower,

Is this a repeat post as I believe you were previously collecting names for a Gen 2 tank in whiuch case you have mine already.

Is there any update as to where you are on the required 10 names?

I need to go back and check numbers.. I am at about 3 or 4 for the Gen 2 at the moment. I think I can get away with 6 names as the tank could be a very good one and need very little work...

So there is (POSSIBLY)
Fugly
Nooj
426hemi
Crowman

Possibly one more not on the forum too..

It is close... Just need to confirm and get 2 more who are definitely going to have one.

Oh well... The cost of making a mould from a plastic tank is double making one from a steel or composite one. So as I said if I get 10 who want a Gen 1 I would do it.. Its just getting to the break even point. If I only make 10 tanks I have a mould and have covered costs only. It only becomes profitable once  you get to 11+.

The Gen 2 I have been offered is a composite one. I had the opportunity to buy ALL of the fuel tank moulds that QB Carbon had and any masters. But there was almost nothing I could use there apart from about 3 things. So having a composite Gen 2 has lowered the bar quite a bit and may make it easier to look at a Gen 1 if I get to do a few extra Gen 2's.

That is the unknown. The Brand new Falco tank had to have a LOT of sanding on the underside to get rid of ripples and negative draft issues. The top could have marks too simply from the process. BUT the biggest issue after now having done several plastic tanks is the tank really needs to be filled with something to make it solid and not crush when it is in a vacuum.

I completely understand that it's business and you have to go for the largest number in a shrinking market with aprilias , not many people are prepared to spend this kind of money on an older bike, just a problem that I am a carbon tart😍

No shame in that..

The RS250 is also an older bike but having made about 16 tanks for that bike over the past 2 years and the Falco too which was never a bike I expected to make anything carbon for it is not that much of a surprise that even older bikes will have new carbon parts fitted to them. Doing 10 Falco tanks was the biggest shock to be honest.. So who knows. The problem is needing a perfect Gen 1 tank to copy as they are all now starting to swell to some degree and would be a bit of a risk when you allow for Aprilia's engineering tolerances on the rest of the bike.

Seen the new tanks. But at between £800 and £900 for a new tank plus the cost of the mould at about £2500 it brings the cost up to about £3500 when you allow for any extra work too.  With about £600 in material  for each carbon tank sold for £950.00 each if they are sold PLUS  £100 for lacquer.(based on 245gr per sq/m costing me £65.00 and the tank weighing about 2.2KG).  There is £350.00 left to pay for adhesive, sealer, bagging consumables and electricity for the oven at 48 hours in the oven.  It would give less than £300 per tank "profit" per tank so 12 tanks would only cover costs and no wages from any of those tanks. At 2 weeks , if I am lucky, to make each one that is 24 weeks or almost 6 months with no wage to simply cover the cost of a mould.

That is why I always try and cover 10 sales with a tank that is good but was either supplied to me or was cheap. Then I can at least make a little money per tank even if it is only about £50.00 as I know after those are done I will make some profit and the mould is paid for.

If you need a 2000 tank you can have my spare, it hasn't been on a bike for years and I'm not to bothered about it getting wrecked if it means more carbon👍

Ok guys.. I have done some more work and been to see a few people about getting moulds made a little cheaper (more work for me though) and if the tanks are priced at £950.00 plus shipping (un-lacquered) I could do it with 6 names. I have had a few let me down with lacquer and the time it takes me to do it would almost double the time to make a tank. So found a company who will do a great job for £250.00 which is not too bad when you look at the cost to have a good paint job.

I have a Gen 2 tank here so if I can get names (NO DEPOSITS UNTIL IT IS 100% SORTED) from those who are 100% I will get the moulds started. More names would be good but 6 will just cover getting the moulds paid for and the cost of the materials for those first 6 tanks. After those are made I can start to put some food on the table.. lol..

I am still looking at getting the pattern tank ready for being moulded but it is looking like I will have to put it on hold for other things. I do love making tanks but I have to be realistic on if there will be enough sales to make it worth while.

I will keep you guys updated with progress on the stuff I can do up to the point it would start to be an investment. If I dont have the numbers I will just have to wait..

Think the same thing would happen if I said the Gen1 tanks too Hemi. I know Christmas is on its way too, but even if I had a prepped tank done today it would be the new year before the first one would even be possible.. Not knocking anyone at all. I would do a carbon bog seat if there were enough demand to let me make a living. At the last count just in fuel tanks I am at 17 or 18 RS250 tanks and 10 Falco tanks. So yes I think there is a demand for the Gen1 and Gen2 tanks. But its having £2500 to £3000 to just throw at it and hope I get it back fast enough to let me keep buying materials and all of the other stuff too.Its a juggling act and I will keep going while its just my time being invested. If there are names appear or there end up 6 names for a Gen1 tank and a pattern tank I will do the first one that will cover itself.

I can understand that totally..
For me if the Falco tank works it does save a lot of time and money to use the same mould. But if there is enough wanting the correct shape I would still do it.
As long as I hit the minimum numbers to cover costs for anything I am happy to make it.. Having a minimum number also shows there is some demand too, I feel.  If I cant get 6 to 10 wanting something then I think I may struggle to get even more sales if I cant hit the minimum numbers.

That would be my thoughts (The later one) as well but I'm not in the position to spend a grand on a tank anyway so my preference doesn't really count - at least for the moment.

Posted By: morepower

Looks like the Falco tank will work.. BUT it has the wrong shape in my opinion and although it could work easily it does look very odd and leaves a huge gap between the bottom of the tank and frame.

SO anyone wanting a Falco tank on their bike.. Yes it can be done...
Should it be done? Not sure about that one to be honest.

Shame in some ways as it would have saved making a mould and I could have just made them straight away. But the last thing I want is to make some and then when you get on want a refund because you dont like the look of it...

I think making some form of covers to let it be used would end up costing about as much as a fuel tank mould. You need to mock up the covers then make into parts good enough to then mould from. Then you have a splash mould the needs to be refined a little more to get it just right and allow for shrinkage. Then make a master from the splash mould and then finally a production mould. It would still be a compromise.

If increased capacity is needed then it could be possible to make up a base for the RSV tank and modify it to fill voids or make it fit closer to the airbox etc. But as the original tank is 18 litres anyway I think a carbon one would be about 22 litres as it has a lot of surface area and the plastic is thick anyway.

A proper copy of the tank is the best solution but still needs enough demand to make it worth doing.

If someone does want to have a Falco tank for their bike I would gladly make one.. But it is a compromise and unless there is an actual fault I would not want to have it back because "it looks wrong.".  I think we know that now anyway..
LOL

As I said if there is demand for something I would be more than willing to do it.

He needs at least 10 orders to make it pay and there is 3 types of tanks so to get enough people together for each type of tank is a problem, I would have an early gen1 in a heartbeat.

That’s not a bad idea actually.

If there was a price reduction for buying the x3 i would seriously consider it as it also means everyone else can benifit from progressing this project.

Hi guys... Sorry I have been so busy doing random crap that I have not had time to come and look round....

I keep adding up all the people who say yes and it is usually the same 3 or 4 each time...

SO If I can get 8 who will guarantee they will have a tank I will get a mould made and make them.. I WILL need one of either generation to copy and who ever has a good, smooth and no scratches tank to copy would have it for the cost of materials only... The prices after the Brexit scare and the increase in prices we have seen on all sorts of things luckily has not had the same impact on my materials.. So a typical tank at say £900 (unlacquered) went up to £950. I was expecting about £100 to £150 increase so the prices will be really close to what I had estimated originally.  Lacquer still costs me £100 to get done by a local company. So Gen 1 or Gen 2 if I can get 8 who will be 100% sure they want one put yoyr names down and which version you want... If I get 8 of each I will do both generations.

I must have been having a bad day...  But sadly 5 still would not have covered the cost of the mould...  But if you want 5 I would have to look at a deal and to make it worth it for you I would guess then I would have had to have 10 or 12 definite orders to allow for some discount for the size of the order. I want to keep the price as keen as possible and make a living. I dont see the point in taking the piss and adding £300 just because I can get away with it and make a few less for the same profit.

That is a good price.
All the carbon one's iv found are all nearer 3000 mark.also could the airbox cavity be made larger? or would that mess
Fueling up? Just a thought.

If you have an evo or hooked kit on you don't need a bigger airbox.

How resistant to Ethanol would these tanks be as I've heard carbon doesn't react well. I had a carbon tank on my old Speed Triple and coated it with Caswel to make sure.

Currently on the fence about a Gen2 tank... Hmm 🤔 I

I searched this and found they no different to our plastic tank and regarding caswel various results with contraction/expansion over time good old ethanol makes me hangry need to feed
