Ah cool :) I've put it up on the Facebook group and there's a few takers already.

Staying in a "nice" little place in Llanymynech...certainly not the Ritz but it's just a bed for the night after all Big smile

I'm hoping to rope some people in to lead and be back maker if you're interested - local road knowledge would be good Wink

Oh really? That would be great! Clap Thank you!

Route is a bit sketchy as I know whereabouts I want to go but I don't know the best roads, might bend your ear about it! I'd rather not lead to be honest, bit too much pressure for me Ouch Start time isn't set in stone either, 10 is probably a good time to start I guess!

what time in newtown? any roughly will do lol. like Tifa i know roads round here well. if i can be of any help?

Posted By: Bird

Literally don't have any plans as of yet! However long it takes to get from where we're staying to Newtown I guess lol!

I'd prefer someone else leading as it's been 6 years since I rode on the roads and I was only on a 125 LOL

The main places I'd like to do are on my first message, I just don't know which exact roads are best Cry

A483 will take you straight to newtown thats direct route. if you want to meet in the bike dealer its on left hand side opposite mcdonalds after set of lights. if you want to go builth wells, you can either take the A483 to cross gates (mega caff there lol), llandrindod wells and then builth (good burger king there!), nice twisty road. or you can go thru newtown, llanidloes, rhayader, to builth. thats more of main road, A470

How about starting a bit earlier and stretching that route to include the Brennig run from the Ponderosa to the Sportsmans Arms and back?

Seems a shame to come all that way and miss out on that.

Just looked on a map - which way round? Through Denbigh and Ruthin or through Corwen? I don't know the roads at all round there and if there's 20-30 bikes turning up, I'll have to factor in the easiest way to keep the group together.

And don't think we'll be able to start earlier than 10am, people are travelling from miles away to make it as it is!

You could always lead for us Ian G Embarrassed

If you can get 20/30 bikes turning up for a ride you must have some very special talents Wink

The only time I've ever seen those sort of numbers is the AP open days,we usually manage about 6 LOL

This is just an out and return from the Ponderosa

But if you fancied the scenic route back 'oop noorf' on sunday we could do a loop from the Pondy instead then taking in places like Betwse y coed and Conwy and you could head back straight along the A55 afterwards.

The leg from Cerrigydrudion to the Evo triangle is on one of my old videos here

A road known and loved by all that ride it,with an out and return you can take it really easy and admire the view ( and eyeball any possible camera/plod) on the way up then enjoy yourself on the return leg should you wish to.

It would be a shame to come so close and not ride some of our best roads, this is part of our usual milk run from the Pondy when we have a forum meeting.

Well just from the AP Facebook page there's 7 of us confirmed that's staying over for the full weekend, 4 that are coming for the ride on Saturday and 6 maybes and I only posted it up yesterday! Ian, Tifa, Adz, cwp make another 4 so that's a potential of 21 already.

Scenic route back home is dependent on how Saturday night goes I guess, might be feeling a bit ropey Embarrassed

Ive drawn a couple of routes up, both stay away from the main A roads where possible to avoid the attention of plod as is often prevalent at weekends

this one, uses mostly quieter A roads and B roads

So heads off avoiding the Newtown and Crossgates roads and runs over the border to Clun [only road I'm not too familiar with], over the top to Knighton and then into Crossgates [cafe].  into Rhyader and into the Elan Valley around the dams.  To Devils Bridge and into Aberystwyth.  Care on the 487 to Mach and then follows the coast through Aberdovey, Tywyn, Fairbourne then eithe rover the wooden toll bridge or into Dolgellau [Roberts cafe is great].  Lovely sweepers into Barmouth.  Next bit to Harlech a bit slow with lots of 40's but the next bit makes up for it.  down the 470 and then off to Llyn Celyn and onto Bala or cut the corner and take the moorland road through Ffestiniog.  Other option for the brave is the ranges road over to Llanuwchllyn, it's gated.  From Bala [plod!] it's back over the Berwyns, B4391 to the start
it's 227miles

this is my route 2, uses some of the same roads but also a number of smaller quieter roads, with some fantastic views.

it basically takes a different route to Rhayader, taking in Lake Vyrnwy, up to Bwlch Y Groes [highest pass in Wales I think] and down into Dinas.  Then takes another mountain road over Clywedoc and down into Llandiloes.  This is a bit longer at 242m

Both routes take in a series of loops and it's easy to cut short or split into two groups if there are  those that facour the faster A roads or those that favour the twistier B roads but meet at the same points, such as Crossgates, Rhayader, Aberystwyth, Mach', Dolgellau, Bala

What do most people want, Fast A roads with a risk attached or more scenic B roads, bear in mind with isn't the Pan European forum ;-)

Well, I have asked my mate to lead the ride as nobody else has come forward but he's on holiday until this Thursday Unhappy He's also not a local and is only able to ride down Saturday morning from North Yorkshire so it's all going to be very last minute Cry Not sure he'll be able to follow any of the routes posted as he won't know the roads that well.

It's massively stressing me out to be honest and I'm stressed enough with redundancy looming at work Cry

Can't see me making it at all on Saturday as I can't get out until 2. Hope things aren't too drastic at work Bird.

Aw, no worries!

My company is going bust and everyone is being laid off so yeah, it's pretty bad! There's a risk I might be kept on because I work on system support but there'll be barely anyone left and I'll only be kept on for a few months more til everything is turned off. So I need a need a new job ASAP Cry

Had a run out to Wales to recce a route 3 today for Bird's Wales Meet.  Some great pics, great day has to be said, 267miles from home tho, aching a little, Duke ran prefectly and avergaed 39.8mpg which wasn't bad at all given the pace, lots of little stops tinkering with suspension, happy with that.  First part of this route is B roads, then it's around Lake Vyrnwy, which is twisty and very pretty.  Then about 5 miles or so on single track with passing passes, bit of gravel on it, need to be careful but takes you to the top of Bwlch Y Groes, one of highest passes in Wales at 1788ft.  Having cycled up before, it's worthy!  Down into Dinas on a nice road, rolling on and off the throttle through the twists and turns, then there's another minor road 20% up, over Corris.  That's the first 30 miles at a guess, quite slow.  After that the roads open up, smooth surface, certainly into 3 figures on a good few occasions today.  The coast road is ace!  Oh the sheep, yeah.  When you come across a situation like this, when you take off shut your visor, the car in front throws up all the sheep sh*t left in the road, bike jacket and face covered. . . . . . .!
Oh yes, blackberries, free food in Wales!  Wooden bridge crosses the estuary, i didn't go in Dolgellau, but there's a great cafe there.  The fast sweepers into Barmouth are great.  After that bit of a slog up the coast but the views are trmendous.  After Festiniog the roads are quick and well surfaced, down to Bala care through there, and over to LlynClys  Road over here has been resurfaced and a lot of the bumps taken out too.  One of my favourite roads, just don't look at the drop!  And watch the sheep!

When you pick us up depending on the route I could possibly lead into Aberystwyth and up to Barmouth.

I'm not sure how far south we're going to come now though, that's the only issue Cry The original route I thought we'd be going on has been shelved because of cops and traffic so we'll be going on one of the ones Phil has posted up. Is that any good for you?

Posted By: Philly46
Date Posted: 18 Aug 2015 at 09:50
I'll tell you when you make a decision on how far south you'll be coming.

Don't be put off by police either, I've barely seen them over 10 years of riding here.

if there are camera vans you'll have plenty of warning from oncoming traffic lol. if weather sunny expect loads of traffic going to coast anyway. either way enjoy the ride people. watch out for the unmarked plod cars.

We'll be following one of Phil's routes above so not coming as far south as first thought.

We won't be setting off til 10.30am to enable everyone to get to us and get fuelled up before setting off together from near where we're staying.

So,how was it?
I didn't surface until late Sat morning after getting back late and it was raining hard here until mid afternoon when it got quite nice for a while.

Got up early this morning in case anyone was heading in this direction but the roads are still streaming after a night of heavy rain and it's getting darker again

Hope all that traveled had a good time
