Has anyone any tips on replacement fork seals on a 05 RSVR factory?  I've heard of fitting Suzuki seals as an (cheaper?) alternative, if so which ones and is there any advantage at all or do I just stick to original parts?  Cheers for any info?

Suzuki K4 seals. Double lipped instead of single as per Ohlins. (and a lot cheaper)

The seals are cheap anyway, aren't they? I was told its the stantion thats are not made to the same tolerances as the jap ones that causes the leaks.

I replaced my seals with k4 GSXR1000 ones a couple of years ago and they're still going strong 8000 miles later, mine also gets stood for months over winter without a problem, this is what really destroys the ohlins ones and the suzuki ones are fine. 

As for cost, ohlins ones are £50, OE suzuki £14.

£50 quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I only pay £100 to get both forks serviced at an ohlins center. that includes all seals a few o rings clips etc and oil. Plus the labour for the guy to do it

I have a PDF on how to change the forks seals on ohlins forks, I also have a front and rear ohlins manual if anyone wants it? I bought a disc off ebay with some useful/useless information on it depending on your point of view

griff has the latest ohlins seals in which are double lipped and less than £50 for the seals.fitting is more
its twins for me !!!!

Try a seal mate first as its cured my leaking seal and only cost £ 6 on eBay . Look at the vid on YouTube got nothing to lose by trying it .

There are some stories that 'other make' seals contribute to premature coating wear, if true then the extra for genuine is the long term way forward, also if they aren't cleaned out properly perhaps expect to do them again fairly soon?

I have had suzuki ones in mine for years never any problems.
You may get problem on high mileage bikes maybe but probably done half its life with gsxr ones in no problems so far.

The R1 in post above a good bet aswell

Without question try a sealmate first. I have found there is nothing wrong with the seal. Its crap that gets trapped under the seal and makes it leak . If you get it in time the seal mate removes the crap and hey presto it seals again.  Certainly worked for me twice. 


It really does work ...!

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread... Does anyone have a link to the correct k4 GSXR1000 seals? I know AP stock the Ohlins ones for £47, which seems pricey, but could be convinced if it's the 'right' thing to do.

Do yourself a favour and swerve both the tight Gixxer ones and even the later twin lip Ohlins and splash out a bit on the super slippery green SKF units if you can find them.

Virtually does away with any stiction ? in the forks and seal like champs

If you want Ohlins seals I have a brand new set that I bought  but never fitted. Got them from AP I'll take 35 posted?

I would avoid Suzuki seals if you like your nitride coating to survive. You can buy the ohlins seals from Yamaha for less than ape prices. Just order seals for an R1 sp which has ohlins forks.

I think mine came from Brooks Barn iirc which weren't too expensive, and the oil may have been poor...

Thanks a lot. Any idea of the part number? Looking for ones for Ohlins forks from a gen 2 RSV Factory.

I used SKF in mine.
Whereas the genuine (and pattern) Showa seals would sometimes fail and leak (Bushings replaced, stanchions reground even) never had  problems with the SKF's
HIGHLY recommended.
Dunno how well they'd fare on the Ohlins though.
SKF's are very low friction, so should be ok with nitride coatings I'd have thought?

Just for reference (in case anyone is interested) I went with the Yamaha seals and so far am impressed.
I had the Suzuki seals fitted previously and had been unhappy with what I thought was excessive high speed damping.

After conversations with a friendly suspension guy the penny dropped a bit.
It turns out that TiN coating is hard on fork seals because it is incredibly smooth, this means there are not as many microscopic grooves for oil to accumulate in. 
As a result the seals run drier than normal which can lead to stiction and increased wear

I decided to try swapping out the seals but baulked at £50+ for Ohlins so went with the Yamaha seals
5VX-23145-00  
These were originally listed for the 2006 R1-SP but further investigation shows they then became OEM for later R1s (2010 - 2013) 
Best bit - in stock at local Yamaha dealer and £14.99 for the pair!!

Fitted them last night and decided to do a side by side comparison similar to the video above.
And the results were . . . . . . . . very similar actually!
Yamaha seals seem to move much freer and smoother than the GSX-r ones

So back on the bike today and I'll see if the change is as noticeable as I hope

Not really strange when you consider that for many years Ohlins was wholly owned by Yamaha up until Kenth Ohlin bought it back under his control in 2007.
