Or better still, get Brass ones:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201550680571

Then ones fitted, grease them up and cover them with some sort of rubber cap to stop the grunge getting at them.

Actually no, that was a stupid suggestion wasn't it?  Embarrassed      But some sort of additional protection from the elements would be good.

I reckon it'll be a case of swing arm removed and renew the bearings given the neglect of the rest of the bike.

Cut slots in the hugger and pull it off the swingarm. Give it a bit of heat and use a proper pair of vice/mole grips on the sides of the bolt head. Don't use too much force when winding out, you'll risk snapping the head off. if it starts to feel like it's going tight, spray in some oil and wind in a bit, to lube the threads. I use a rocking motion, wind out a half, wind back a quarter -until you feel the bolt loosen on the thread and the tightness has gone - then wind out.
Question everything.

Never used it before, but I've heard that a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf makes a very good release agent.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I really appreciate the advice, however I've just found some terminal damage to the swingarm and it's fooked, bent in key areas.....

Plus after THREE days of soaking, prepping and cleaning the nuts/threads.....

Yep - It's happened....
Anyone see what's gone wrong...

Oh well, I think I've bought something that's almost a no go.....

At best, I think only the frame and engine are salvagable, now the engine maybe gone.....

I'am gonna go and cry in a corner lol

Gotta say, looking at the state of that bike, you're a braver man than me.
I reckon you'd need to spend a wad of money to get that looking just half decent.

That looks to be a lot of work, but I suppose it's down to what you want from the bike. If it is a 'fix it to get it running type bike' then that is a lot of hard graft. If it is a 'strip it  and restore it' then it will be money well spent if you can do the work yourself.
You can use it as a learning platform, the fact that it is in such bad shape means that it almost isn't the end of the world if something breaks, granted it's a pain in the ass though!

Nicky, just take your time and enjoy the learning process, the ability to make your own mistakes and not have any pressure to get it done, apart from your own, is very valuable. Just remember not to give up too easily, if it was easy everyone would do it.

Nicky  - Andy Galloway on the FB page had a Gen1 Swing arm recently he may still have it .
Also don't despair regarding the snapped studs as My Gen 2 suffered the same fate and it was fine after they were drilled out.
It may be a bugger of a job to do but it is fixable and at least you already have the front of the bike stripped which gives good access.

NickyBoy....don't be too disheartened.
Worst case scenario, buy a good length of chain, and sell it on, as an anchor.

Seriously, you'll get your money back if you break it mate.

drop the forks out and rear wheel off mate make the rest of it as light as anything ....

Small scissor jack mmmmnnnn

I'd do above no front or rear and have the bottom of the engine on a padded piece of wood and lift the frame off the engine
