I have led replacement bulbs fitted in my head lights with covers over the ends so no direct light is seen. So much brighter than bulbs and no error codes etc.

Hello Stevie,
Sounds interesting, what make of led bulbs did you use? Do they stick out of the back of the headlight unit at all? Do they have the braided cable cooling? And lastly.... Got any pics? Cheers Rick |

Direct replacement
You will need to cover the led's on the end so there is no direct light only reflected, to pass mot. The light in this pic is from the flash the lights aren't on. They are a lot brighter. |

I changed most of my old Land Rovers lights for led's. They look very similar to those. I haven't done the headlights yet though.
Where did you get the caps from? Whats the beam pattern like? |

I smoothed off fizzy bottle lids so they fit through bulb opening them stuck them over end of lamp with silicone. This replicates standard pattern and passes mot. Without there is direct light which destroys pattern and fails.
The leds are so much brighter, use much less power to run, produce no heat and are a direct replacement. 😁 |

Led's don't generate heat, which is one of the main reasons they use so little power. The bulbs have been fitted for 18 months with no issues. They are H7 led replacement bulbs.

I was having a scout on Ebay searching "H7 led". Obviously it throws all the h7 fog lamps up etc as well. There's quite a selection though, some of them cheap (buy cheap, buy twice I wonder?) And a pair of the Cree red anodized ones for £996!!

H7 generally are for fog lights. With the end covered it doesn't matter as no direct light so just get usual pattern

My mistake. I presumed by the amount of fog light that come up when searching that they were commonly used in them.

I have a dipped HID conversion in mine. It's passed three MoT's like this with no issues. There's no beam scatter despite the reflector lens of the OEM headlight, it seems that RSV headlights work very well in conjunction with retro fitted HID's.
I also fitted LED's to the high beams, but to be honest the dipped HID is so good I never use them at night. |

Sorry guys, been away at a works course this week and I have to fight the M73/M80 roadworks to get home!! Ok, here's a link to the LED bulbs I bought a while back, still going strong. They are not for 'seeing the road' rather, they are 'to be seen', more like a DRL than lights that are any use in the dark. I was at one point, using them with the diode mod removed which meant when I switched to high beam the dipped headlight went out and the x2 high beam LED's came on, on their own. I got the idea from John Walker who had that setup on his red RSV. But I've since chucked the diode mod back on and now I sometimes ride with all bulbs lit, especially when filtering through slow moving traffic. Burns holes in the back of dozy car drivers skulls!! I note from eBay you can now buy more powerful LED's at anything from 20W to 80W (claimed) and these which I have are supposed to be just 7.5W but they are plenty bright enough 'to be seen' - that said, they don't put much light output down on the road but as I already mentioned that's not an issue because with the HID kit in the dipped beam there's no real need for high beam anyway. Right, with that wall of words out of the way, here's the link! :-

HID kit was this one:- Don't let the price put you off, for £13 it's an utter bargain. You would be hard pressed to buy a decent Halogen bulb for that. Easy to fit, no issues to date. I think it was either the 4300k or the 6000k colour temp I went for, don't get 8000k or higher as it looks crap and puts out less light on the road. Make sure you check your model year though as the bulb types between early Gen 1 RSV years changed between 1999-2000 models and the 2001/2002/2003 models. |

Thanks for that Gary, I can't believe the price. Sure looks bright enough.
All that for 35 quid. Bit of a no-brainer really. |

The LED's are a straight plug and play. The HID kit is pretty much the same although you need to put a slit in large rubber headlight cover which slots over the bulb hole, thread the wires from the HID bulb through and fit them into the wiring harness multi plug where the OEM bulb would normally fit. Then carefully fit the HID bulb into the headlight and tidy it all up. I then velcro'd the ballast/igniter unit to the underside/right hand side of the headlight unit and connected the ballast plug to the other plug coming off the bulb leads. It's easier to see when you actually have the kit in front of you, you can't fit it incorrectly.
I'm fookin' hopeless with auto electrics - if I can do it right, anyone can!!
