Hi all,
I have a 51 Falco, pretty standard apart from a set of scorpion cans.  I am due a new chain and rear sprocket and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on upgrades/trusted alternatives or whether to just worry about price????
thanks in advance

Personally i found cheap chains are false economy as they end up worn quickly or with tight spots.
I would steer clear of the cheapo triple SSS type chains and stick with a good brand. DID, Tsubaki, etc etc.

Whilst doing sprockets assuming you have the stock gearing now, consider lowering the gearing a little. Helps the acceleration and around town quite a bit. Sprockets wise i like Renthal hard anodised stuff.

Cheers Spoonz and Sabre,

A little more help if you please.

How the heck do I select a gear ratio?

So far I have seen

15/41
15/44
16/43
16/44

I understand there is an improvement in acceleration (looking forward to that) but at the sacrifice of top-end (not to bothered about that as I am not a mentalist), with a risk of vibes on the motorway (dont want that).

How does the front and rear tooth number work?  i.e. small front = better acceleration but how does the rear affect it?

As I type I feel I am understanding more! I am guessing the list above is in order of severeness of affect???

Ratio is going to be personal preference to an extent.  For every 1 tooth you go down at the front is like adding 3 on the rear.  I used to run 1 down at the front and one up on the rear as a compromise because i tour and need some economy etc on motorways. If you don't need that then 15/43 or 44 is probably a good bet.

regards top speed it's not huge difference as the stock gearign struggles to rev right out anyway so a slightly lower gearing will achieve more revs to keep almost the same top speed. The negative is more that you are running higher revs at motorways speeds so it can be a bit more vibey and use more juice but not huge amount.

I'd suggest going down one tooth on the front first. That will make it much more manageable and less lumpy round town. Easier on the clutch hand as well.

I started that way and found it to be a vast improvement. I've since gone one up on the rear sprocket as well, so I'm now running 15/42. Much fun!!

Stock on a Falco is 16/41 BTW
