Well that's a surprise,Dave Hewson comparing a classic R1 with the Gen2 Tuono he refurbed a while back.

Perhaps I need to finish my rebuild and spend some more time setting the suspension as I still think mine doesn't handle as well as my Mille.

Just a shame my body isn't so enthused with the riding position of the Mille these days, been out on it once since I put it back on the road and found it quite uncomfortable tbh, fine for track use but definitely not ideal for a relaxing country ride.

I don’t but a couple of guys on the pb forum do, I’ve got some ducabike rc51 clipons on mine, I’ll probably get some of these next.

I did think about something like those but decided to buy the Tuono instead to get the best of both worlds bike wise.

I shall be changing the T bars to get a flatter profile and more weight over the front wheel anyway so hopefully that'll do the trick when I finish it's refurb.

Another thing against those expensive adjustable clipons is the fact I find any standard angle bars uncomfortable,I favour a much steeper wrist angle, imagine Jota bars turned to an almost 45o downwards angle and that's my happy relaxed riding posn with arms forward.

It helps tuck the elbows in as well

One of the old GP riders from the past had the same issue as I recall .  Jarno Sarrinen? maybe

There is one brand of clipons that are adjustable for rake but not to the extent I'd go for unless I turned up some bars to suit.

It certainly was Jarno Saarinen, what a rider he was. I was lucky enough to see him whup Ago on the works MV at Scarborough, Ago had all the MV fitters and big transporters etc. Jarno had an old G reg transit with a padlock on the back doors like an old builders van. What a turn he was

Hi Diablo, not so much dragging his knee just a very very smooth intelligent rider. Your partner and the Finnish nation should be rightly proud he was a brilliant rider and a really nice guy, if it wasn’t for the decision made by others at Monza both him and Renzo Pasolini would have gone onto greater things, what a shame.

Hi Ian G, the flatter bars will help for sure, my gen 2 Factory has them, while my R1 is a 2CR, when it was virtually standard I found it very uncomfortable. The seat felt like a rock, the suspension and steering damper were sh*te.
But MCT sorted out the suspension, got some seton bars, flatter and longer, which took a bit off getting used to, even the Gen 2 has Evol clipons which are flatter and it made a massive difference. I went for a road ride on the R1 with a friend with GSXR thou, ached a bit after two hours later on, but you do get used to them. My gen two is on the bench next for a total refurrb.
Although very different, they are both enjoyable, I am healing slowly. The Gen 2 is such an easy bike to ride, you almost get spoilt. But a pro suspension setup or even yourself as I did with my gen 2, fatter bars and you will be happy with it .
The first ride on the R1 I thought i had made a mistake, but it is reasonably comfortable, I am sure you will find it different after a bit of finding about, that gen R1 was to me one of the best looking ones too. I have had to put my Superstock on the road, but I don't really find that uncomfortable, hopefully it will be back on track next year. Once you get used to them with a few mods i think you will feel different about it, good luck 🤞 👍
