Hi all.
My name is Ash, and I am a newbie.
I am desperately looking for advice on my 2003 gen1 Tuono, 12500 miles.
Totally out of the blue the other day, I got a engine knock on initial cold starting. It went away after about 10/15 seconds. I was concerned! Never done this before
Get the feeling it went when the oil got round a bit. Let it stand for about 5 mins, and restarted , no noise attall.
This exact process repeated exactly the same the next day.
Have chatted to Griff on the phone @ AP Workshops, he seems to think it’s cam chain tensioners.
Two questions please,
1 how do I check them if I can get them out,
2 is it a relatively easy job to do.
Hope someone can help me with this problem.

There isn’t really a straightforward test for them even if you take them out as they won’t show any external visual faults.  Getting them out is more or less difficult dependant on which cylinder purely from an access point of view.

Thanks Spoonz. I have downloaded an Aprilia workshop manual that I got from Griff/ Snox, but believe it or not , there is no mention at all of cam chain tensioners??? You really couldn’t make this up ! So I have ordered a Haynes manual that’s comming today. I hope to god that’s more helpful, or I’m in deep dodo. 
I’m assuming you just locate which cylinder the noise is comming from, gain access, and unscrew the retaining nut , and extract old one, then insert new one then bobs you’re uncle. I have tread that they need to be set up before being inserted ?. But this info is vary vague? Any ideas on this mate please ?

Pre install is really just to pump some oil into them so they don’t clatter at first startup until they fill.

Just received my manual from Amazon. It’s got all I need in good detail, so I’m gonna have a go at it at the weekend.
Thanks for you’re help in this, I feel a lot mor confident in approaching this job now. Plenty of tea, and just take my time is the order f the day I think.

Rear one is really easy to access, front needs some water cooling stuff removing.
Don't forget you'll need a new crush washer for each tensioner cap.
People say I don't know Jack Sh1t; but I do, he lives next door.

I removed my rear tensioner when replacing my valve shims on the rear pot.
Rather than strip to gain access to the front tensioner when re shimming the front pot I decided to remove the inlet cam sprocket from the cam to release the cam chain instead. 
If you've got to replace your front tensioner I guess you'll have to bite the bullet.

Yeah, Sod’s law, it’s the front cylinder. The Haynes manual I’ve bought is really pretty comprehensive on this job , so just gotta follow the steps, and take things steady. Gonna do an oil and filter change as well while I’m at it. Might as well kill two birds etc.

It's not too bad, it needs to come out during a valve shim service. I find the most awkward bit is getting under the round balance unit thingy, but it can be done without removing it totally. Don't forget a new copper o ring when you refit it.

Have rung Griff/Snox up at ap performance, gonna order new parts this week, so all good. Just glad it’s been raining down here for ever! At least I’m not wasting good weather, whilst off the road 😅
