Well without even asking a question this forum has already provided me with some useful technical advice.

My recently purchased 03 Mille R was fine on smooth roads but down here in Debon most roads aren't smooth (in fairness that applies all over ). I've had bikes with steering dampers before and expected a low speed roll when cold but this felt different.

The bike has done very little mileage over the last three or four years so I wondered if the damper might have partially seized up. A quick search on here soon showed up a few threads which indicated that might be the case. A quick call to Griff, who knows the bike, and he suggested removing it.

Damper removed this morning and a quick fort miles over bumpy A and B roads this afternoon and wow what a difference. I'll get the damper rebuilt but won't rush to put it back on.

I don't have one on mine and don't think it really needs it.

Like I believe Honda/HRC  once said ' a steering damper is a band aid to cover up bad suspension, they have no place on a well set up bike'

I still have them fitted as they're unobtrusive but I ran without on my SV1000s which I'm sure only had one as Suzuki were still trying to live down the 'Widow maker' TL1000s image

I bet Honda regretted saying that when the ST1100’s started killing police riders from the severe head shake.

And Honda had electronic steering dampers built in to mid- noughties Fireblades.

Quite possibly,I think it came about when people queried the lack of a damper on some sports bike they'd just released years back.

There was a spate of Police riders getting spat off BMW boxer bikes as well, back in the day when I first into middle weight Honda's, I wonder if they used them as guinea pigs?

I worked for a large bike dealership at one time and the thought on the police bike weaves was that it was all the extra weight of radios, lights, extra batteries that created the problems. We had a customer who travelled from Devon to London twice a week on a ST1300 Pan and he never had stability issues.

I’m sure there was an investigation and they found panniers induced it at certain speeds so that would fit in with police bikes. To be honest I’ve read of ktm’s, BMW’s and all sorts having weaves with panniers. It like sticking a small sail on each side of your bike.

Police bikes were seriously loaded, all the radios, batteries, telescopic lights and panniers full of kit and the top brass wouldn’t allow them to alter the tyres from original spec but expect them to hammer them all day long, f**king idiots.
